Jamaican names are a layer cake of British colonial history, West African heritage, and the island's own creative flair. Surnames are overwhelmingly English and Scottish because enslaved people were given planters' names: Brown, Campbell, Williams, Smith, Thompson, Grant, Reid, McKenzie, and Bogle appear on every parish register, and Scottish names are so common that Jamaica has more Campbells per capita than Scotland. Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, and Jewish Jamaican families add surnames like Chin, Lyn, Chin-Sang, Issa, and Henriques.

Given names are where the island stands out. The 1940s to 1970s produced a wave of names rare elsewhere but unmistakably Jamaican: Delroy, Everton, Fitzroy, Barrington, Linton, Winston, and Garfield for men; Hyacinth, Icelyn, Novelette, Claudette, and Beverley for women. Since the 1980s, hyphenated female names (Shelly-Ann, Kerry-Ann, Toni-Ann) and invented names with distinctive spellings (Shanique, Kadeem, Tajay, Sashagaye, Jevaughn) have become the norm.

Every Jamaican also has a yard name, the nickname the community actually uses. Dancehall and reggae artists turned these into stage names, so Beenie, Bounty, Shabba, Buju, Sizzla, and Popcaan sound normal on the island. Patois words (Likkle, Bigga, Ras, Bredda, Sista, Miss, Mass) and Rastafarian terms (Jah, Natty, Ital, Iyah) shape those nicknames.
