A stage name does two jobs at once: it has to be easy to say when an MC introduces you, and it has to stick when someone searches for you afterward. Real performers arrive at theirs in a handful of ways. Some keep a real first name and swap the surname for something with more snap (Ruby Vale, Jett Marlowe). Some drop the surname entirely and go by one word with texture, the way Velour, Sable or Halcyon would read on a poster. Others build a persona from a title plus a word, such as Kid Cobalt, Sister Clementine or Madame Ruby, a pattern that runs from blues and country through hip-hop and drag.
