Roots, dub and lovers rock song titles
Generate reggae song titles for bands, producers and fictional sound systems: roots anthems, lovers rock, ska and rocksteady dance tunes, dub versions and riddim names, such as Roots and Rain, Lantern Dub and Breadfruit Riddim.
About reggae song names
Reggae titles are plain-spoken and rhythmic. They sound like something a singer could say to a neighbor over the fence: Carry the Load Lightly, Share the Shade, Steady Like the Tide. The music grew out of ska and rocksteady in 1960s Jamaica, and each era left its own title habits. Ska and rocksteady name the dance and the band (Trombone Says Go, Rocksteady Heart), roots reggae of the 1970s speaks about justice, hardship and unity, and lovers rock, the romantic style that took shape in 1970s London, stays tender and domestic (Honey in My Morning Tea).
Two reggae customs shape the rest of the list. A version is the instrumental or dub mix that traditionally sat on the B-side of a single, so many titles end in Dub or Version: Lantern Dub, Market Road Version. A riddim is a backing track that many different singers and deejays voice, and it carries a name of its own, usually short and often borrowed from the first hit voiced on it: Breadfruit Riddim, Tamarind Riddim.
The 1,000 titles run through sixteen styles, from dancehall party tracks and call-and-response chorus lines to praise songs, island days, proverbs and letters home from colder cities. Use them for your own tracks, a fictional band's discography or a sound system in a story.
How to choose reggae song names
- Say the title over the beat. The one drop puts the weight on the third beat of the bar, so short, stressed words sit best: Roots and Rain, Tin Roof Testimony.
- Name the dub after the vocal. A title such as Market Road Version tells the listener it is the flip side of a song called Market Road; a new image such as Dub of the Evening Tide suits a mix that travels far from the original.
- Give a riddim a short, concrete name that people can shout to a selector: one or two words, a fruit, a tool, a corner of the yard. Pimento Riddim travels better than a full sentence.
- Use Patois only where you would say it yourself. A simple, common phrase such as Walk Good, My Friend or Likkle More, See You Sunday sounds warm; spelling out an accent you do not speak sounds like a costume.
- Search the exact title with the word reggae before you release. The genre has decades of records behind it, and a title shared with a classic will bury your song in search results.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a song title sound like reggae?
Plain words, a steady rhythm and an image from everyday life. Titles such as Carry the Load Lightly, One Pot Feeds the Lane and Steady Like the Tide read like advice from a neighbor, which is how much roots reggae speaks. Love songs keep the same directness with a softer subject, as in Your Laugh on the Veranda.
What is the difference between a dub, a version and a riddim?
A version is an alternate mix of a song, traditionally the instrumental on the B-side of the single. A dub is a version remixed further, with most of the vocal taken out and the drum and bass pushed forward under echo and reverb. A riddim is the backing track itself, which many artists record their own songs over, and it gets a name of its own, like Sea Grape Riddim.
Can I use these titles for my own songs?
Yes. Song titles are generally not protected by copyright, so you are free to use any of them. The list has not been compared with any catalog of released records, though, so search a title before you release under it. A name shared with a famous song is hard to find on streaming services.
How are the 1,000 titles organized?
They are mixed together from sixteen styles: roots, lovers rock, heartbreak, ska and rocksteady, dancehall party tracks, dub versions, riddim names, praise songs, island days, rebel songs, chorus lines, story songs about working people, proverbs, letters home, songs about the music itself and hill-country weather. Every batch draws from the whole list, so reroll until one fits your track.
