About leafwing names

LeafWings are the leaf-scaled, plant-magic dragons of Pantala in Wings of Fire, introduced in The Lost Continent arc as a tribe presumed extinct and hiding in the Poison Jungle. Like every tribe in the series, they name their dragonets after things in their world, and for LeafWings that means plants. Canon LeafWings include Sundew, Willow, Hazel, Sequoia, Belladonna, Mandrake, Bryony, Nettle, Hemlock, Pokeweed, Wolfsbane and Cobra Lily. The pattern is a single word (occasionally two, like Cobra Lily) naming a tree, flower, herb, vine, fungus or part of a plant.

The books also hide a small joke in the tribe's naming: the militant PoisonWing faction favors toxic and carnivorous plants (Belladonna, Sundew, Hemlock, Wolfsbane), while the peaceful SapWings lean toward gentle trees and herbs (Hazel, Willow, Sequoia). You can signal an OC's politics with the plant you choose. Rare botanicals such as Bloodroot, Skullcap, Rafflesia, Strangler Fig or Datura are perfect for PoisonWings, and Linden, Alder, Chervil or Bluebell for SapWings.

Every name in this list is a real plant, fungus or plant part, so it drops cleanly into a Wings of Fire roleplay server or fanfiction. Because they're also just good nature names, they suit druids, dryads, forest spirits and green dragons in any setting.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Signal faction with the plant: toxic or carnivorous species (Datura, Deathcap, Bladderwort) read as PoisonWing, gentle trees and herbs (Linden, Chervil, Cowslip) read as SapWing.
  • Avoid canon names for original characters. Sundew, Willow, Hazel, Sequoia, Belladonna, Mandrake, Bryony, Nettle, Hemlock, Pokeweed and Wolfsbane are all taken.
  • Match the plant to the dragon's look or ability: a LeafWing with leafspeak might be Taproot or Mycelium; a small, quick one could be Sprout or Tendril.
  • One word is the rule. Two-word names like Cobra Lily or Water Lily are canon-acceptable but should stay rare.
  • Tropical jungle plants (Kapok, Rafflesia, Liana, Passionflower) fit the Poison Jungle setting better than temperate wildflowers if you want strict accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

How are LeafWings named in Wings of Fire?

LeafWings take single-word names of plants: trees (Sequoia, Willow, Hazel), flowers and herbs (Bryony, Nettle), and especially poisonous or carnivorous species (Sundew, Belladonna, Hemlock, Wolfsbane, Mandrake). Two-word plant names like Cobra Lily occasionally appear.

What are the canon LeafWing characters?

Major LeafWings include Sundew, Willow, Hazel, Sequoia, Belladonna, Mandrake, Bryony, Nettle, Hemlock, Pokeweed, Wolfsbane and Cobra Lily. Queen Sequoia leads the SapWings and Belladonna leads the PoisonWings in the Poison Jungle.

Can a LeafWing be named after a mushroom or fungus?

Fungi aren't plants, but the tribe's naming is loose enough that Morel, Chanterelle, Deathcap or Mycelium feel right, especially for a PoisonWing raised in the damp Poison Jungle.

Are these LeafWing names free to use for OCs and fanfiction?

Yes. They're common plant names, so you can use them for any Wings of Fire OC, roleplay character or original nature-themed dragon without restriction.
