Generate purple dragon names where the color is the point: invented draconic names like Violessa and Tanzarith, gem, flower and fruit names like Orchidwing and Plumshadow, royal and arcane titles, and epithets such as The Violet Tide. For pets, toys, OCs and campaign wyrms.

About purple dragon names

A purple dragon gets its name from its color, and purple gives a namer a lot to work with. It is the color of amethyst and tanzanite, of wisteria, lavender and ripe plums, of the sky in the half hour after sunset, and of rank: Tyrian purple, a dye made from murex sea snails, cost so much that it became the mark of emperors. In fantasy art it is also a common color for arcane magic and for poison. Each of those gives a different dragon, from a jewel-scaled hoarder to a twilight hunter or a robed tyrant.

The list covers all of them. There are invented draconic names built on purple roots (Violessa, Tanzarith, Indigar, Mauvrax), compounds such as Plumshadow, Orchidwing and Lilacmaw, gems, flowers and fruit used as names, royal and imperial titles, nightshade and hex names, words for purple and violet from other languages, and epithets such as The Violet Tide and Indigar the Twilight Wyrm. Small dragons, pets and plush toys get their share too: Grape, Jellybean, Sugarplum, Figgy.

Purple is not one of the five classic chromatic colors of Dungeons & Dragons, so at most tables a purple dragon is a homebrew creature and you decide what the color means. Pick the names whose imagery matches your answer.

How to choose purple dragon names

  • Decide what purple means for your dragon first: a gem dragon suits Tanzarith or Iolite Eye, a twilight hunter suits Vesperax, and a tyrant suits Imperatrix or Tyrian Queen.
  • Pair a true name with an epithet. Keep a draconic name for the stat block and let the villagers use a title such as The Mauve Menace or Shadow Over the Vineyard.
  • For a pet, a plush or a puppet, short and soft wins: Plumlet, Ube, Mauvie and Figlet are easy for a child to say and to call across a room.
  • Say the name aloud with the dragon's size in mind. Long, hissing names read as ancient, and one or two syllables read as young or friendly.
  • If you plan to publish your story or game, search for the name first to see whether another well-known dragon already carries it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a purple dragon?

It depends on the dragon. For a grand campaign wyrm try Porphyreth, Amaranthyx the Unfading or The Amethyst Tyrant. For a gentler dragon try Violessa, Wisteria or Lady Lavender of the Dry Hills, and for a small pet try Grape, Jellybean or Sugarplum.

Are purple dragons part of Dungeons & Dragons?

Purple is not one of the five classic chromatic colors (red, blue, green, black and white). The game does have two relatives: the amethyst dragon, one of the gem dragons, and the deep dragon of the Underdark, which some editions also call the purple dragon. Most purple dragons at the table are still homebrew or original creatures, so the breath weapon is up to you, and the name can hint at it: Aconrax for a poison breather, Thundrax the Purple Bolt for a lightning breather.

Why are so many of the names royal?

Purple was the color of rank for centuries. Tyrian purple dye came from murex sea snails and cost so much that it was kept for rulers, and children of Byzantine emperors were said to be born in the purple. That is why the list holds names like Tyrianax, Murexa, Porphyrogenitus and Imperatrix.

Can I use these names in a book, a game or a stream?

Yes, you can use them for characters, pets and campaigns. Most are ordinary words or invented names, and we have not checked them against existing books or games, so search a name before you publish. The list is fixed and anyone can see it, so another person may pick the same name. Adding an epithet of your own, in the pattern of Indigar the Twilight Wyrm, sets your dragon apart.
