Generate names for D&D gem dragons: resonant Draconic true names such as Amethurion, Crysalinth, Smaragdion, Sapphiraxus and Topazareth, crystalline sobriquets like Facetwing and Geodeheart, psionic epithets, wyrmling nicknames and titles for the heirs of Sardior.

About gem dragon names

Gem dragons are the third family of Dungeons & Dragons dragons, standing apart from the chromatic and metallic kinds. There are five: amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire and topaz. All are psionic, most are neutral in outlook, and Fizban's Treasury of Dragons ties them to Sardior, the Ruby Dragon, whose shattered essence they are said to carry. A good gem dragon name should sound like a Draconic true name and hint at a mind as hard and clear as a cut stone.

The list gives each kind its own block of true names. Amethyst names are deep and measured for dragons that act as sages and mediators (Amethurion, Ianthemar). Crystal names are bright and light for the friendliest gem dragons (Crysalinth, Lucivane). Emerald names hiss and hide, fitting reclusive lorekeepers (Smaragdion, Virenthys). Sapphire names are martial and percussive, matching their thunder breath and territorial habits (Sapphiraxus, Resonathor). Topaz names are dry and salt-bitten for coastal hermits (Topazareth, Desiccara).

Around those sit epithets and psionic titles (The Unspoken Voice, Malachar the Thousand Masks), Common sobriquets built from gem-cutting and mineral terms (Facetwing, Cabochon, Chatoyance), titles for dragons who claim Sardior's legacy (Heir of Sardior, The Reassembler), and short nicknames for wyrmlings such as Glint and Shardling.

How to choose gem dragon names

  • Choose the kind first. An amethyst dragon mediating a planar dispute needs a calmer name than a sapphire dragon drilling its kobold garrison, and the blocks in this list are written with those temperaments in mind.
  • Pair a true name with a title for ancient dragons. Esmerathul Keeper of Lost Ages or Legatharion the Patient General tells players the dragon's age and obsession before it speaks.
  • Let the breath weapon color the sound. Thunder suits booming syllables (Tollathun, Drumazure), radiant light suits clear ones (Lucivane, Halomere), and the drying breath of a topaz dragon suits harsh, parched names (Drythvane, Huskmaker).
  • Use a Common sobriquet for the name locals know. Villagers near the lake will say Old Mindglass or The Violet Mediator long before anyone learns the dragon is called Velmorath.
  • Keep Sardior titles rare. One dragon calling itself Heir of Sardior is a plot hook; five of them in one campaign is a committee.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a gem dragon?

For a true name try Amethurion, Crysalinth, Smaragdion, Sapphiraxus or Topazareth, one for each kind. For a name the locals use, pick a sobriquet such as Facetwing, Geodeheart, Prismscale or The Light Through Stone. Wyrmlings suit short names like Glint, Facet and Shardling.

How are gem dragon names different from chromatic and metallic names?

The Draconic sound is the same, with hard consonants and long multi-syllable forms, but the imagery changes. Instead of fire, frost and precious metal, gem dragon names draw on crystal, light, facets and the mind: Mindlance, Thoughtwing, The Lattice of Memory. Titles also tend to stress neutrality and judgment, as in Planar Arbiter and Balance-Keeper.

Who is Sardior?

Sardior is the Ruby Dragon of D&D lore, described in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons as the first of dragonkind and the source of the gem dragons' psionic nature. Titles in this list such as Heir of Sardior, Shard of Sardior and Keeper of the Ruby Shard suit dragons who claim part of that legacy.

Can I use these names outside D&D?

Yes. Apart from a small number of titles that mention Sardior or D&D monsters, the names are invented for this list or built from ordinary gem words, and they fit any setting with crystal, jewel or psychic dragons. The mineral sobriquets such as Cabochon, Druse and Chatoyance come from real gem-cutting and mineralogy terms.
