Generate names that mean or evoke purple: given names such as Violet, Iolanthe, Sumire, Yukari and Ibolya, shade names like Mauve, Heliotrope and Tyrian Purple, plus purple flowers, gems, fruits, birds and places. Built for baby names, pets, characters and projects.

About purple names

Very few given names mean purple outright. Most of the ones that come close are really the word for the violet flower: Violet and Viola from Latin, Ianthe and Iolanthe from the Greek ion, Sumire in Japanese, Ibolya in Hungarian, Fjóla in Icelandic, Menekşe in Turkish and Sigal in Hebrew. A smaller group names the color itself. Murasaki is the Japanese word for purple and Yukari can be written with the same character, Bora is purple in Korean, Argaman is the biblical Hebrew word for purple, and Porphyrios and Porfirio go back to the Greek for the purple dye.

The rest of the list evokes purple rather than meaning it. There are shade and pigment names (Mauve, Heliotrope, Byzantium, Han Purple), the words for purple, lilac, lavender and plum in dozens of languages (Morado, Paars, Zambarau, Flieder), purple flowers and gems (Wisteria, Pasqueflower, Charoite, Sugilite), fruits and wine grapes (Damson, Ube, Malbec), birds (Purple Martin), surnames built on heather, plum and wisteria (Ljungberg, Pflaum, Fujiwara) and places known for lavender, lilac or amethyst.

History explains the royal reputation. Tyrian purple was made from murex sea snails and was costly enough to be kept for emperors, and the Byzantine title Porphyrogenita means born in the purple. Mauve is far younger: William Perkin made the first synthetic purple dye in 1856.

How to choose purple names

  • For a baby name, start with the names that have a plain meaning: Violet, Viola, Ianthe, Iolanthe, Sumire, Ibolya, Fjóla and Sigal all come from the word for the violet flower, so you can tell the child where the name comes from.
  • Match the shade to the subject. Pale names such as Lilac, Wisteria, Thistle and Lavender Mist suit a soft gray or lilac coat; Aubergine, Damson, Nightshade and Byzantium suit something darker.
  • For a fictional character, keep the given name and the surname in one language. Sumire with Fujisawa, Ibolya with Szilvási or Heather with Plumridge reads as a person rather than a color swatch.
  • Look up a word from another language before you use it. Mor, Lila, Ungu and Zambarau are plain color words to native speakers, and Erik is the Turkish word for plum as well as a familiar Scandinavian first name.
  • For a username or a project, the rarer pigment and dye words (Orchil, Cudbear, Gridelin, Zinzolin, Purpurissum) are less worn than Violet or Amethyst. Check for yourself whether a name is already in use before you build on it.

Frequently asked questions

What names literally mean purple?

Only a handful. Murasaki is the Japanese word for purple, Bora is purple in Korean, Argaman is biblical Hebrew for purple, and Porphyrios, Porfirio and Porfiry come from the Greek word for the purple dye. Many more names mean violet, the flower: Violet, Viola, Ianthe, Iolanthe, Sumire, Ibolya, Fjóla, Banafsheh, Menekşe and Sigal.

Are there boy names that mean purple?

Yes, though fewer. Porfirio, Porphyrios and Porfiry mean purple, and Viorel is a Romanian masculine name built on viorea, a word for the violet. Iamus is a figure of Greek myth whose name was tied to the violets he lay among as a baby. Shade and plant words such as Tyrian, Phoenix, Heath and Damson evoke the color without meaning it.

What are good purple names for a pet?

Short shade and food words work well: Plum, Fig, Ube, Taro, Mauve, Grape, Thistle and Damson. For a gray-lilac coat try Lilac Point, Wisteria or Heather, and for something grander Byzantium, Amethyst or Tyrian.

Why is purple the color of royalty?

Tyrian purple, the dye of the ancient Mediterranean, was made from murex sea snails in small quantities, so purple cloth was costly and was later reserved for Roman and Byzantine emperors. The list keeps that history in names such as Murex, Tyre, Porphyry, Laticlave and Porphyrogenita, the Byzantine title that means born in the purple.
