Puma Name Generator
Cougar and mountain lion names, Yukon to Patagonia
Generate names for a puma, the cat also called cougar, mountain lion and catamount: tawny coat names like Fawn and Sandstone, places of its range such as Teton and Aconcagua, Spanish words like Sombra, and stealth, leap, cub and mascot names.
About puma names
Puma, cougar, mountain lion and catamount are four names for one cat, Puma concolor, which lives from the Yukon to Patagonia, the widest range of any large wild land mammal in the Americas. Puma is a Quechua word. Cougar reached English through French from a Tupi-derived name that Brazilians still use as suçuarana, and catamount is short for cat of the mountain. The list also has miztli (Nahuatl), pangui (Mapudungun) and león, the everyday word in much of Spanish America.
The 1,000 names follow the animal. Concolor means of one color, so coat names stay with tawny, sand and ash: Fawn, Dune, Sandstone, Buckskin. Cubs are born spotted and blue-eyed, hence Speckles and Blue Eyes. Places come only from puma country, from Teton, Sawtooth and Chiricahua to Aconcagua and Paine. Stealth names (Whisper, Rarely Seen) suit a cat few people ever see, leap names (Longleap, Springheel) its powerful hind legs, and voice names (Purr, Whistle, No Roar) a cat that purrs and screams but cannot roar.
Spanish words (Sombra, Montaña, Huella), plants and neighbors of the range (Lenga, Calafate, Guanaco), weather, bynames such as Old One-Ear, mascot names and short game-pet names fill the rest. No black puma has ever been confirmed, so night-coat names are few here; the panther page holds those.
How to choose puma names
- Let the coat lead for an adult: Tawny, Fawn, Sandstone and Buckskin all fit a plain, one-color cat. Keep Spots and Speckles for cubs, whose spots fade as they grow.
- Match the place to the animal's story: a Rocky Mountain cat suits Teton, Sawtooth or Bitterroot, and a Patagonian one suits Paine, Chaltén or Aysén.
- Say the name aloud. A keeper or a child will use it every day, so Mesa, Sombra or Rumi will outlast a long name such as Sangre de Cristo.
- For a litter or a pair, take two names from one group: Lenga and Ñire, Sunup and Sundown, or Zonda and Pampero.
- A word from a living Indigenous language deserves care: before you put one on a mascot or a brand, ask speakers or a community organization how it is used.
Frequently asked questions
Are puma, cougar, mountain lion and catamount the same animal?
Yes: all four are common names for Puma concolor, and which one people use depends mostly on the region. The list has each of them as a name, along with Concolor and Painter, an old word for the cat in the southern Appalachians. Mountain Screamer, Deer Tiger, Red Tiger and Mexican Lion are older regional names for it too. In Florida the same species is called the Florida panther.
What is a puma called in the languages of its range?
Puma itself is Quechua. Miztli is the Nahuatl word, Pangui and Trapial are Mapudungun (the Mapuche language), Koj is K'iche' Maya, and Igmu Tanka is Lakota for mountain lion, literally big cat. Brazilians say Suçuarana, Onça-Parda or, in the south, Leão-Baio, and in much of Spanish America the cat is simply León. Couguar is the French spelling.
What do the Quechua words in the list mean?
Rumi is stone, Wayra wind, Chaska star, Qori gold, Mayu river, Qocha lake, Nina fire, Yaku water and Rit'i snow. Urqu, also spelled Orqo, is mountain, Sacha is forest, Kuntur is condor and Sonqo is heart. Puka means red, Hatun big and Sumaq beautiful, so Puka Puma, Hatun Puma and Sumaq Puma read as red, big and beautiful puma.
Are any of these names from real pumas?
One is: P-22 was the study number of the mountain lion that lived for about ten years in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Everything else is a word, a place or a character-style name, though a zoo or a sanctuary may well have used some of them.
