Names for Bernese mountain dogs, with a small share for Bernedoodles: Swiss German names like Urs, Vreni and Bärli, Bernese places from Eiger to Emme, Swiss food such as Rösti and Züpfe, cart-dog names like Wagon and Senn, and coat names like Rust and Bib.

About Bernese mountain dog names

The Bernese mountain dog is the Berner Sennenhund in German, and a Senn is an alpine dairyman. The breed comes from the farm country around Bern, where these dogs guarded the yard, drove cattle and pulled carts of milk to the dairy. It was once called the Dürrbächler, after Dürrbach, a hamlet near Riggisberg.

The Swiss share leads: Swiss German given names and their everyday short forms, such as Ueli, Vreni, Pesche and Chrigu. The ending -li makes a diminutive, so Bärli is a little bear and Rösli a little rose. Places come first from the canton of Bern: the peaks Eiger, Mönch and Niesen, the towns Thun, Brienz and Grindelwald, and the river Emme with its valley, the Emmental. A smaller set, such as Säntis and Engadin, comes from the rest of Switzerland. Swiss food (Rösti, Züpfe, Raclette), alpine flowers (Edelweiss, Enzian) and dialect words (Müntschi, Znüni) fill it out.

The rest is about the dog in front of you: cart and farm names (Wagon, Carter, Haywain), gentle giants (Big Lug, Papa Bear, Koloss), coat names (Bib, Blaze, Swiss Cross), cozy names for a dog that thinks it fits on a lap (Hearth, Lapwarmer, Pfüsi) and pairs for two dogs. A small share of curly-coat and teddy bear names, a few of them French, is there for Bernedoodles.

How to choose Bernese mountain dog names

  • Say the name out loud before you commit. The Swiss German ä sounds close to the e in bed, while ö and ü have no English twin, so listen to a recording of Bärli, Rösti or Züpfe first. In Swiss German, Rösti is said with a sh sound.
  • Long place names work as a formal name with a short call name: Grindelwald can be Grindel at home, Kandersteg can be Kander and Lauterbrunnen can be Lauter.
  • A name with the little -li ending is a size joke that ages well on this breed. The puppy called Bärli, Lämmli (little lamb) or Pfötli (little paw) will not stay little.
  • Wait for the markings before you choose a coat name. Bib, Blaze, Socks and White Tip each point at a patch of white, and Swiss Kiss is the fanciers' term for a white spot on the back of the neck.
  • Two dogs? Pick a pair from one theme: Eiger & Mönch are neighboring peaks, Aare & Emme are two Bernese rivers, and Znüni & Zvieri are the Swiss morning and afternoon snack breaks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a Bernese mountain dog?

Names from the breed's Swiss home are the natural place to start. From this list, try Urs, Heidi, Bärli, Eiger, Thun, Emme, Rösti, Züpfe, Edelweiss or Senn. If you would rather name the dog than the country, look at Wagon, Bib, Big Lug or Hearth.

What does Bärli mean?

Bärli is Swiss German for little bear: Bär with the diminutive ending -li. Bäri, also in the list, is a traditional Swiss name for a farm dog, and Mutz is the Bernese word for the bear on the canton's coat of arms.

Are the Swiss German names and words real?

Yes. The given names and short forms are ones used in German-speaking Switzerland: Pesche and Chrigu, for example, are Bernese forms of Peter and Christian. The words are everyday dialect, such as Müntschi (a kiss), Znüni (the morning snack) and Gmüetlech (cozy and unhurried). Swiss German has no single standard spelling, so you may see the same word written another way.

Does the list have names for Bernedoodles?

Yes, a small share. Curly-coat and teddy bear names such as Bouclé, Ringlets, Plushie and Woolly Bear are there for Bernedoodles, along with a few French ones like Peluche and Doudou, both words for a cuddly toy. The Swiss names suit a Bernedoodle too, since one side of its family is Bernese.
