Generate Predator (Yautja) names in the styles used across the films, comics and games: film-canon nicknames like Wolf and Celtic, expanded-universe Yautja words such as Dachande and Guan-thwei, and clan titles from Unblooded to Ancient.

About predator names

Predators – the Yautja of the films, comics and novels – are almost never named on screen. The hunters are known by descriptive nicknames coined by the filmmakers and fans: Jungle Hunter, City Hunter, Scar, Celtic, Chopper, Wolf, Berserker, Falconer, Tracker, and more recently the Feral Predator of Prey and Dek in Predator: Badlands. Those names describe a mask, a weapon or a habit rather than anything the character would call itself, and they are the style most people recognise.

The expanded universe added a Yautja language. Dachande (Broken Tusk) from the Aliens vs. Predator novels is the best-known example, and the fan-compiled lexicon supplies words that make convincing names: thwei (blood), guan (night), setg'in (deadly), th'syra (skull), kv'var-de (hunter), sain'ja (warrior), bhu'ja (ghost), yeyinde (brave). Yautja names lean on hard consonants – k, t, kh, dt – with apostrophes marking clicks and glottal stops, so Guan-thwei or Ka'Torag-na read as authentic where softer names would not.

Rank and clan complete a Predator identity. A hunter is Unblooded until its first successful Hunt, then Youngblood, Blooded, Elite, Elder and finally Ancient; Bad Bloods are outcasts who broke the code, and Arbitrators are sent to hunt them. Combining a Yautja name, an epithet and a rank – 'Th'syra Skull-Taker, Blooded of the Dark Blade Clan' – gives a character the weight the franchise's hunters carry.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide how the name is used before you pick one: humans in the story would use a descriptive nickname (Wolf, Chopper), while other Yautja would use a language name like Setg'in or Kv'var-de.
  • Combine a Yautja word with an epithet earned on the Hunt – Guan-thwei the Silent, Ma'kaha One-Tusk – so the name records a trophy, a scar or a reputation, which is how the clans track honour.
  • Add a rank appropriate to age and experience: Youngblood for a hunter on its first Hunt, Elder or Ancient for a clan leader, Bad Blood for a villain who ignores the code.
  • Keep the sound harsh and clipped; k, t, dt and kh clusters plus a single apostrophe read as Yautja, while soft vowels and long flowing syllables read as a different species entirely.
  • Assign a clan name (Dark Blade, Lost Tribe, Killers) to a group of characters so their nicknames share a theme, e.g. all mask-based or all trophy-based.

Frequently asked questions

Do Predators have real names in the movies?

Not on screen. Names like Jungle Hunter, City Hunter, Scar, Wolf and Berserker come from scripts, credits, merchandise and fans. The comics and novels introduced Yautja-language names, most famously Dachande ('Broken Tusk'), and Predator: Badlands gave its lead hunter the name Dek.

What does Yautja mean and where do the language names come from?

Yautja is the species name introduced in the Aliens vs. Predator novels by Steve and Stephani Perry. The Yautja vocabulary used for names – thwei for blood, guan for night, kv'var-de for hunter – comes from those books, later comics and games, and a widely used fan lexicon.

What are the Predator ranks or castes?

The commonly used progression is Unblooded, Youngblood, Blooded, Elite, Elder and Ancient, with Bad Bloods as clan outcasts and Arbitrators as the enforcers who hunt them. Predator: Hunting Grounds and the films add classes such as Berserker, Scout, Assassin and Super Predator.

Can I use these names for fan fiction, tabletop games or original characters?

Yes. Film and comic names belong to their franchise, so treat those as references for fan work, but the original Yautja-style names and epithets here are free to use for your own hunter characters, RPG villains or original alien species.
