The epithet first, the way sailors actually spoke: Black Davey Lunn, Half-Hanged Jory Trask, Madras Mary Hobbs. And the legend form, Garrick the Gull or Morwenna the Merciless, which is how a captain is remembered twenty years after the hanging.

Whatever style you pick, the name should be easy to shout in a storm and slightly unsettling in print: a surname with a hard consonant, one vivid image in the nickname, and more weight than any name in the crew.
