Captain Name Generator

A captain's name does a lot of work in a story: it is how the crew addresses them, how the harbourmaster logs them and how enemies curse them. Historically, ship captains were simply called by title and surname, which is why "Captain Bligh", "Captain Cook" and "Captain Ahab" sound so natural. A strong captain name therefore needs a surname that carries weight on its own, usually two syllables with a hard consonant (Thornbury, Blackwood, Kessler, Okonkwo), paired with a given name that fits the era and the ocean the ship sails.

Pirate and privateer captains broke that rule by adopting nicknames that described a feature, a weapon or a reputation: Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Black Bart.
