Sea Captain Name Generator

Real sea captains of the age of sail and steam mostly had the ordinary names of the ports they came from, and that is what makes a captain's name ring true. Nantucket and New Bedford whaling masters carried Quaker and Old Testament first names (Obed, Peleg, Zaccheus, Tristram) with a small set of island surnames: Coffin, Starbuck, Macy, Folger, Hussey, Gardner. Cornish and Devon skippers were Penhaligons, Trelawneys and Pascoes; Scots masters in the tea and jute trades were Macraes, Dunbars and Gillespies. Norwegian, Danish and Dutch coasts produced the Haraldsens, Rasmussens and de Groots who ran the tramp steamers, while Greek islanders, Genoese, Basques and Portuguese crewed the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.

The other half of a good captain's name is the title and the nickname. 'Captain' (or Skipper, Master Mariner, Commodore) goes in front of the full name, and the crew quietly attaches something else: 'Squall', 'Nine-Fingers', 'Old Salt', 'Dead Reckoning'. Fiction adds a third layer, surnames built from sea words (Blackwater, Saltmarsh, Tidewell) that no real mariner carried but that readers accept instantly.
