Classic PSO sums the ASCII values of the characters in your name, adds a class offset, and takes the result modulo 10 to assign one of ten Section IDs (Viridia, Greenill, Skyly, Bluefull, Purplenum, Pinkal, Redria, Oran, Yellowboze, Whitill). Each ID changes rare drop tables, so many players tweak a letter or two to land on the ID they want.

CASTs are androids, so canon names lean mechanical or minimalist: Elenor, Ult, Kireek, Io. Players often add a model number or unit tag (Vetra-9, Helix-04) or pick words from engineering and metallurgy like Rivet, Ferrum or Torque. Purely human names work too, since many CASTs in the lore were named by their owners.

Yes. PSO2 and NGS use the same races and the same naming mood; canon characters like Afin, Matoi, Zeno, Aina and Manon follow the short anime-style pattern set by the original game. The main difference is that PSO2 names can be longer and the Section ID mechanic no longer exists.

Nothing stops you from naming a character Rico or Flowen, and plenty of players do as an homage, but you will usually share the name with others on the same ship or server. The original names in this list are better if you want something that feels like it belongs in the setting without duplicating an NPC.
