Naming a Final Fantasy XIV character is harder than it looks because the game enforces uniqueness per world and the community quietly grades you on lore. Square Enix published naming conventions for every race, and they are consistent enough to learn in a few minutes. Midlander Hyur pull from English and Old French stock (Aldous Whitmore, Rosalind Fairweather); Highlanders go Germanic with rugged compound surnames (Hrodgar Ironmane). Wildwood and Duskwight Elezen use French names, and Ishgardian nobility add a house with "de" (Ambroise de Vautrin).

Lalafell follow strict rhyme schemes: Plainsfolk men repeat a doubled syllable across both names (Nonoto Nono), Plainsfolk women rhyme the ending (Pipiro Ripiro), Dunesfolk men use an ABAB pattern (Zozoru Mimiru), and Dunesfolk women take "Ul" between two short names (Nini Ul Nini). Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te carry a tribe letter and apostrophe, women take their father's name (D'shani Rhal), and men end in Tia or Nunh; Keepers of the Moon use a mother's family name and male suffixes such as 'a, 'to, 'ra (Rihn'a Vahza). Roegadyn Sea Wolves build names from Old Norse-like roots ending in -syn or -wyn, while Hellsguard translate theirs into plain phrases like Quiet Thunder. Raen Au Ra use Japanese names, Xaela use Mongolian ones plus a tribe name, Viera are short and vowel-sparse (Ktrn), and Hrothgar sound broadly Slavic.
