Sci-Fi Name Generator

Most science fiction names are not invented from scratch; they are real names pushed a few degrees off centre. Writers take an uncommon but pronounceable first name (Kael, Vesper, Orin, Soraya) and pair it with a surname that is either clipped and hard (Voss, Vane, Crux, Rask) or borrowed from a culture the reader does not expect next to it (Okonkwo, Lindqvist, Ishikawa, Achebe). That combination signals a future where populations have mixed and names have drifted, without forcing anyone to sound out apostrophes. Hyphenated double surnames such as Okonkwo-Reyes and Vaughn-Hale push the same idea further.

Different subgenres have their own registers. Space opera favours grand Latin and Greek first names (Cassius, Tiberius, Persephone, Ptolemy). Cyberpunk and military sci-fi lean on one-word handles and callsigns (Parallax, Nullwave, Ghostline) a character chose for themselves. Androids and clones get designations with a number or a phonetic-alphabet element (Unit Seven-Kestrel, Echo-Four Marlowe, Varga Nine), and non-human characters get names with unfamiliar consonant clusters and vowel endings (Talis Orun, Kyron Vashti, Iria Tovash).

The test is whether the name fits the level of technology and social order you have built. A gritty asteroid miner called Lucienne Farr and a corporate heir called Brix Navarro tell the reader which one grew up with money before either of them speaks.
