Generate Ozian names from every corner of the Land of Oz: Munchkins, Winkies, Quadlings and Gillikins, Emerald City courtiers, Nomes, witches and enchanted creatures. Canon names from L. Frank Baum, Ruth Plumly Thompson, Wicked and the films sit beside hundreds of originals in the same bouncy, color-coded, Oz-prefixed style for fan fiction, RPG characters and cosplay personas.
About ozian names
Ozian is the word Baum and later writers use for anyone from the Land of Oz, and Ozian names have a recognizable bounce. Baum built them to be read aloud to children: clipped, friendly two-beat names for Munchkins and Winkies (Boq, Ojo, Woot, Jellia Jamb), grander ones for royalty and sorceresses (Ozma, Glinda, Gayelette, Lurline), gruff rocky names for the Nomes under the Deadly Desert (Ruggedo, Kaliko, Guph) and hyphenated nonsense for the odd folk at the edges of the map (Ku-Klip, Coo-ee-oh, Tititi-Hoochoo). Royalty often carries the Oz- prefix, as in Ozma, Ozga and Ozana, and Ruth Plumly Thompson's later books pushed the whimsy further with Kabumpo, Jinnicky and Pigasus.
Gregory Maguire's Wicked added a second register: Elphaba (from Baum's initials L-F-B), Nessarose, Galinda Upland, Fiyero Tigelaar, Avaric Tenmeadows and Madame Morrible sound like an invented aristocracy, with surnames that mark a Munchkinlander, an Arjiki prince or a Gillikinese socialite. The four countries also have colors, so Munchkin blue, Winkie yellow, Quadling red, Gillikin purple and Emerald City green are a ready source of names and nicknames.
The list here mixes canon characters from the books, the 1939 film, The Wiz, Return to Oz, Wicked, Oz the Great and Powerful and Alexander Volkov's Russian Magic Land with original Ozians in the same styles.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide which country your Ozian comes from and borrow its color: a Winkie named Goldenrod or Tinkerby, a Quadling called Rubyanna or Carmine, a Gillikin called Violetta or Mauvelyn, a Munchkin called Bluebonnet or Cobaltine.
- For Baum-style names, keep them to one or two syllables with doubled consonants and a playful ending (Tuppin, Jibb, Quibbeck, Fizzwick); for Wicked-style names, give a three-syllable given name and a surname that sounds like a place or estate (Vellaby Thropp, Marillot Upland).
- Reserve the Oz- prefix for royalty or ancient magic users (Ozmund, Ozabel, Ozwin); using it on every character makes the whole cast sound like one family.
- Nomes get hard consonants and short vowels (Klep, Skrag, Bruggo), enchanted tin, clockwork and patchwork beings get names that describe what they are (Tinwhistle, Clockett, Ragamuff), and witches get sibilant, slightly sinister names (Hexabel, Cursabella, Mombina).
- Many Ozians go by a single name, so only add a surname if the story needs one; Baum himself rarely bothered outside Dorothy Gale and a few visitors from the outside world.
Frequently asked questions
What does Ozian mean?
An Ozian is any inhabitant of the Land of Oz, whether a Munchkin from the blue east, a Winkie from the yellow west, a Quadling from the red south, a Gillikin from the purple north or a citizen of the green Emerald City at the center. Baum used the word in the later books, and Gregory Maguire's Wicked uses it constantly, along with Ozianisms like Munchkinlander and Gillikinese.
Where do Wicked's names like Elphaba and Fiyero come from?
Gregory Maguire built Elphaba from L. Frank Baum's initials (L-F-B), and Nessarose, Galinda, Fiyero, Boq and Avaric were invented to sound like an Ozian upper class. Glinda, Boq, Ozma, Mombi, Tip and Nessarose's country Munchkinland all trace back to Baum, while surnames like Thropp, Upland, Tigelaar and Tenmeadows are Maguire's additions.
Are these names only from the 1939 movie?
No. The film gives us Dorothy Gale, Glinda, the Wicked Witches and a handful of others, but the fourteen Baum books and the later Famous Forty by Ruth Plumly Thompson and others supply hundreds more, and Wicked, The Wiz, Return to Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful, Emerald City and Dorothy Must Die each add their own. Original names here follow those same patterns.
Can I use these names for a D&D character, cosplay or fan fiction?
Yes. Baum's Oz books are public domain, so their names are free to use anywhere, and the original names in this list are free as well. Characters created for Wicked and the modern films belong to their authors and studios, so treat those as inspiration for fan works rather than commercial projects.
