Grandpa Name Generator

Grandpa names come from three sources: what a first grandchild manages to pronounce, what the family's culture hands down, and what the grandfather himself picks before anyone else can. Toddler mispronunciations gave the world Bumpa, Boppa, Gampy and Pop-Pop, and once a name sticks with the eldest grandchild it usually becomes permanent for every cousin who follows. Regional English varies a lot: Papaw and Peepaw are Southern and Appalachian, Pop-Pop is strongly Mid-Atlantic, Grandad dominates in Britain, and Grampy shows up in New England and Canada.

Heritage names are the second big pool. Opa (German and Dutch), Nonno (Italian), Abuelo or Lito (Spanish), Zayde (Yiddish), Dziadek (Polish), Papou (Greek), Jiddo (Arabic), Yeye (Mandarin), Harabeoji (Korean), Lolo (Filipino) and Morfar or Farfar (Swedish, distinguishing mother's father from father's father) let a family keep a language alive through the youngest generation. Many families mix these with a first name, giving Papa Joe, Grandpa Walt or Nonno Vito, which is also handy when there are two grandfathers to tell apart.

Modern grandfathers increasingly choose something younger-sounding, which is where Grandude, G-Pa, Coach and Skipper come from. If you are writing an elderly character rather than naming a real grandfather, the list also includes the mid-century first names (Walt, Gus, Hank, Amos) that read instantly as someone born before 1950.
