Generate period-accurate 1930s names built from the most popular American given names of the Depression decade and surnames from the era's real ethnic mix, plus the double names and nicknames people actually went by.

About 1930s names

The 1930s sit between the Jazz Age and the war, and the names show it. Robert, James, John, William and Richard led the boys' charts all decade, while Mary, Betty, Barbara, Shirley and Patricia led the girls'; Shirley in particular exploded after 1934 thanks to Shirley Temple, and Donald, Ronald and Gerald all peaked in these years. The names that feel most distinctly thirties today are the ones that have since vanished: Elwood, Delbert, Orville, Wendell, Lavern, Doris, Norma, Wilma, Maxine, Geraldine and Phyllis.

Two habits give a 1930s character instant authenticity. The first is the double name, especially in the South and the farm belt: Betty Jean, Billy Ray, Bobby Joe, Mary Lou, Ora Mae, Earl Vernon. The second is the nickname, because almost nobody used a formal name day to day. Men were Bud, Red, Slim, Dutch, Buddy or Sonny; women were Dot, Midge, Toots, Babe or Bobbie. Boys were also routinely named for heroes of the moment, which is why you meet men called Franklin Delano, Woodrow Wilson and Jack Dempsey something.

The surnames here reflect the actual 1930 census: old Anglo and Scots-Irish stock, Black Southern families, and the Italian, Polish, Jewish, German, Scandinavian and Irish communities that filled Northern cities, plus Mexican-American families in the Southwest.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Place the character by region through the surname and the style: a double name like Dessie Mae Hightower says rural South, while Seymour Feldman or Angelo Pastore says Brooklyn or Chicago.
  • Give working-class men a one-syllable nickname (Red, Bud, Slim, Dutch) and keep the formal name for official scenes; that is how most men of the decade were actually addressed.
  • Avoid names that peaked later such as Linda, Sharon, Gary, Debbie or Cheryl. They will make a 1930s character feel like a 1950s one.
  • For a wealthy or old-money character, reach for Sterling Hathaway, Philippa Rhinelander or Archibald Wentworth; for a Dust Bowl migrant, Clovis, Orval, Lovie Mae or Dovie Lee.
  • Middle names were often a mother's maiden name or a president's surname, so Harding Coolidge Mills or Jennings Bryan Holt is not a joke, it is history.

Frequently asked questions

What were the most popular names in the 1930s?

According to Social Security data, Robert, James, John, William and Richard were the top boys' names of the decade, and Mary, Betty, Barbara, Shirley and Patricia were the top girls' names. Donald, Ronald, Gerald, Doris, Joan and Marilyn were also at or near their all-time peaks.

Why are there so many double names like Betty Jean and Billy Ray?

Double given names were extremely common in the American South and Midwest in the 1920s and 1930s, and people were usually called by both names rather than just the first. They are one of the quickest ways to make a character sound like they were born in 1933 rather than 1963.

Are these names good for a Great Depression or Dust Bowl story?

Yes. The list includes the rural and Southern names typical of Dust Bowl migrants (Clovis Sanderlin, Ora Mae Blaylock, Orval Hickenlooper) alongside urban immigrant names for city settings and old-money names for society characters, so you can cast an entire Depression-era story.

Can I use these names in a published book or game?

Yes. They are combinations of common period given names and surnames, not specific real people, so they are free to use in fiction, screenplays, tabletop games, video games or historical role-play.
