ODST Name Generator

Orbital Drop Shock Troopers are the UNSC Marine Corps' special operations force, the 105th Shock Troops Division, dropped feet first into hell in single-occupant pods. Unlike Spartans, who go by a first name and a service number (John-117, Kelly-087), ODSTs are ordinary enlisted humans with ordinary names, so the convention set by Halo 3: ODST and the novels is a realistic full name, a Marine rank and a short squad nickname: Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck, Lance Corporal Kojo "Romeo" Agu, Corporal Taylor "Dutch" Miles, Private Michael "Mickey" Crespo, and the Rookie, whose real name is only revealed later.

The UNSC draws from every Earth culture and its colonies, so a believable roster mixes West African, Slavic, Hispanic, East Asian, Arabic, Scandinavian and Anglo surnames without comment, and women serve in the same billets as men. Callsigns follow real-world military habits: one or two syllables, often a wry observation about the person (Specs, Preacher, Shakes, Pockets), a tool or weapon (Hatchet, Ratchet, Wrench), an animal (Mako, Kestrel), or a joke about a mistake they will never live down (Twofer, Doorstop).
