Sangheili, the saurian warriors humans call Elites, follow one of the most recognizable naming systems in Halo. A name has two parts: a short given name of one or two syllables, then an apostrophe and the name of the warrior's keep, lineage or clan. Thel 'Vadam belongs to the Vadam keep of Sanghelios; Rtas 'Vadum comes from Vadum. The apostrophe is not decorative but marks the boundary between the personal name and the family name, and it always sits directly before the second word.

During the Covenant era, Sangheili who swore military service added the honorific suffix -ee to their family name, so Thel 'Vadam served as Thel 'Vadamee and Rtas 'Vadum as Rtas 'Vadumee. After the Great Schism many warriors dropped the suffix to signal that they no longer fought for the Prophets. Whether your character keeps or drops the -ee is a quick way to tell players which side of the war he stands on. Some famous names carry a middle element too, such as Xytan 'Jar Wattinree, where Jar marks an especially venerable line.

Canonical Sangheili given names favor hard consonants and short vowels (Thel, Rtas, Jul, Usze, Zuka, Bero) while keep names tend to end in -am, -um, -ai or -om. Follow those sound patterns and the result will read as convincingly Sangheili as anything from the games or novels.
