Sister Nickname Generator
Funny and sweet names to call your sister
Find what to call your sister, out loud, in a card or in your phone: classics like Sis and Seester, teasing names like Hoodie Thief and Bossy Boots, mock titles such as Her Royal Bossiness, contact labels like Favorite Sister (By Default), and labeled words for sister from Hermanita to Unnie.
About this generator
Most sisters answer to something other than their name at home. It usually starts small, with Sis, Sissy or Seester, and a phone contact gives a second chance: the label only you see when she calls. This list of 1,000 covers both, and every entry works without knowing her first name.
Birth order does a lot of the joking. An older sister gets names about going first, such as Second Mom, The First Draft and Curfew Negotiator, while a younger one gets Tiny Boss, The Finale and Little Sister (Not So Little). Around those sit teasing names built on habits (Hoodie Thief, Bathroom Hog, Bossy Boots), sweet ones like Sunshine and Ladybug, mock titles such as Her Royal Bossiness and Chief Opinion Officer, contact labels like Favorite Sister (By Default), and names for twins, stepsisters, half sisters and sisters-in-law.
Many languages have one word for an older sister and another for a younger one, and some change the word with the speaker. Tagalog has Ate and Hindi has Didi for an older sister, Mandarin has Jiejie for an older and Meimei for a younger one, and in Korean a younger woman says Unnie while a younger man says Noona. Those entries carry a label in parentheses saying which sister the word is for, in common romanized spellings.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick a contact name for the screen it shows up on. Your phone displays it on the lock screen and in the car, so Sister (Do Not Lend Money) is funnier in private than when a coworker sees the call come in.
- Match the word to the language, the birth order and the speaker before you borrow it. Ate, Didi and Jiejie are for an older sister only, Hermanita and Meimei are for a younger one, and in Korean Unnie is what a younger woman says while Noona is what a younger man says.
- Tease about what she does, not what she is. Hoodie Thief and Shotgun Stealer are jokes she can laugh at and deny, while a name about looks or grades stops being fun the second time.
- In a birthday card, open with the joke and close with the sweet one: Closet Raider on the front, First Best Friend inside.
- For a sister-in-law or a stepsister, choose a name that says she belongs. Sister by Choice, Bonus Sister and Sister, No Asterisk all leave out the legal detail on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
What are funny names to call your sister?
Jokes about her habits land best: Hoodie Thief, Bathroom Hog, Bossy Boots, Queen of the Eye Roll and Mom's Informant are all in the list. Mock titles work too, such as Her Royal Bossiness, Duchess of Drama or Chief Opinion Officer. Keep it to things she does, so the joke stays friendly.
What is a good contact name for a sister?
A contact name can be longer than a spoken nickname because only you read it. Favorite Sister (By Default), Sister (Sends 14 Texts in a Row), Incoming Voice Memo and Sis (On Her Way, Allegedly) are examples from the list. Remember that it shows on your lock screen when she calls.
What do you call a big sister or a little sister?
For an older sister the list has Second Mom, Deputy Mom, The First Draft and Seniority Queen, and for a younger one Tiny Boss, Kid Sister, The Finale and Forever the Baby. A middle sister gets names like The Family Diplomat and The Monkey in the Middle. Twins have their own set, from Twinsie to Better Twin.
How do you say sister in other languages?
The list has labeled words from dozens of languages, among them Hermana (Spanish), Sœur (French), Schwester (German), Sorella (Italian) and Dada (Swahili). Many languages split the word by age: Ate in Tagalog, Abla in Turkish and Akka in Tamil all mean an older sister. Each of these entries says in parentheses which sister it is for, and a few say who uses it, such as Unnie, which a younger woman says in Korean.
