Telescope Name Generator
Names for space telescopes, arrays and backyard scopes
Generate telescope names for space missions, mountain sites, radio arrays and the scope in your backyard, from Halvorsen Deep Field Telescope and Meridian Array to The Really Rather Large Telescope, Bob the Dob and Big Bertha.
About telescope names
Professional telescopes get their names in a few well-worn ways. Many honor a person: the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope are real examples. Others are named for the mountain they stand on, and a famous few simply state their size, as the Very Large Telescope does. Radio instruments often work in groups, so many of their names end in Array or Interferometer, and survey projects love an acronym.
This list of 1,000 names follows those habits without copying them. The honor names use made-up surnames or astronomers from long ago, as in Halvorsen Deep Field Telescope and Hevelius Lunar Mapper. The sites are fictional peaks and deserts such as Mount Ansgar and Saltglass Desert. The acronyms spell real words and expand to something an instrument could do, for example HUSH (Hydrogen Ultra-Sensitive Hunter), and the size-bragging tradition gets a friendly ribbing in The Really Rather Large Telescope.
The rest is for telescopes closer to home and further from reality. There are campus and club instruments, antique brass refractors, pet names for a backyard scope (Bob the Dob, Photon Hog, Big Bertha), observing-field puns, fantasy spyglasses and lonely listening posts for science fiction. A Dob is a Dobsonian reflector and a Mak is a Maksutov, in case the nicknames are new to you.
How to choose telescope names
- Decide what kind of instrument it is first. Telescope suits a single mirror or lens, Array or Interferometer a group of dishes working together, and Explorer, Mapper or Imager a space mission with one job.
- For an honor name, invent the person. Give your setting an astronomer with a surname and a discovery, then let the staff shorten the name the way The Halvorsen and The Okonkwo do on this list.
- Build an acronym backwards: pick a short word that sounds right (DUSK, TERN, FLARE), then find an expansion that describes the job. If the expansion needs a filler word to work, pick another acronym.
- A backyard telescope usually earns its name. Wait for the first night out: the scope that needs two trips to the car, fogs over or finally shows you Saturn's rings will suggest its own nickname.
- Naming a real club or school instrument? Search the name before you paint it on the tube. This list is fiction, but a name here can match a real telescope or observatory by coincidence.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a backyard telescope?
Amateur astronomers tend to name a scope for its shape, its color or its habits. The list has affectionate ones like Big Bertha, Bob the Dob, Stovepipe and Photon Hog, and rueful ones like The Cloud Magnet and Aperture Fever. Short names work best, because you will say it every time you carry the thing outside.
How do real telescopes get their names?
Usually from a person, a place or a plain description. The Hubble Space Telescope honors an astronomer, the Keck telescopes carry a funder's name, and the Very Large Telescope describes itself. Many working instruments are known only by the size of the mirror. Those real names are mentioned here as examples and are not part of the list.
Are the names on this page real telescopes?
No. The list is written as fiction: the scientists with invented surnames, the mountains and the acronyms are made up, and the historical astronomers honored in names like Riccioli Moon Mapper are long dead. There are a great many telescopes in the world, so a name can still match a real one by chance. Search it before you use it in public.
What should I call a telescope in a science fiction or fantasy story?
For science fiction, name the place and the job: Heliopause Listening Post, Oort Watch Station, Farside Dark Ages Radio Telescope. For fantasy, drop the word telescope and use glass, lens or spyglass with an owner, as in The Moonwright's Lens and The Farseeing Glass of Ysolde.
