Mystic Name Generator

A mystic is someone who claims direct experience of the hidden, and across cultures their names follow a recognizable shape: a plain given name carried into a life of silence, then an epithet added by other people. The Delphic Pythia, Thorbjorg the Little Völva, Julian of Norwich, Rabia of Basra and Milarepa were all named this way, by place, practice or a single defining quality. A good mystic name therefore has two layers: a real-sounding given name (Ione, Hesper, Anselm, Farid) and an epithet that says what the person sees, refuses or keeps (the Veiled, of the Salt Marsh, Who Dreams True, the Fasting).

Sound does the rest. Mystic names favor soft, open syllables and quiet surnames drawn from water, light and weather (Stillwater, Greywell, Evensong, Lantern), and avoid anything that sounds like a warrior or a ruler. Titles come from real traditions when the character belongs to one: Pir, Baba and Dervish for Sufi figures; Sadhvi, Swami and Rishi for Hindu ascetics; Lama, Ani and Khandro for Tibetan practitioners; Mother, Sister and Anchoress for medieval recluses; völva and spákona for Norse seeresses.
