Generate voodoo-inspired names rooted in Haitian Vodou and New Orleans Voodoo: titled priests and priestesses (Houngan, Mambo, Papa, Manman), Kreyòl and Creole full names, the lwa themselves, and the queens, doctors and root-workers of Louisiana. Built for novels, RPG characters and Halloween personas.
About voodoo names
Voodoo names come from two related but distinct traditions. Haitian Vodou uses Kreyòl and French: a priest is a houngan (oungan) and a priestess a mambo (manbo), and both are addressed familiarly as Papa or Manman followed by a given name—Papa Josaphat, Manman Célie. Everyday Haitian names carry the flavour on their own: French saints' names and compound names like Jean-Baptiste, Dieudonné, Yvrose and Mirlande, with surnames such as Toussaint, Saint-Fleur, Philogène or Pierre-Louis. The spirits served are the lwa, whose names mix Fon, Yoruba, Kongo and French: Papa Legba, Ayizan, Damballa Wedo, Erzulie Freda, Ogou Feray, Simbi, Azaka, Gran Bwa and the Gede family led by Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte.
New Orleans Voodoo sounds different. Its practitioners were Queens, Doctors, Mothers and Madames—Marie Laveau, Doctor John, Sanité Dédé—with Louisiana Creole surnames like Lacroix, Thibodeaux and Dufresne, and its folk-magic cousin hoodoo gave us root doctors, conjure men, traiteurs and gris-gris women.
The generator mixes authentic titles, Kreyòl nicknames (Ti for little, Gran for elder, Mèt for master), historical lwa and invented practitioners, so you can name a character without inventing a faux-African word that sounds wrong to anyone who knows the religion.
Tips for choosing a name
- Lead with a title to signal the role: Houngan or Papa for a Haitian priest, Mambo or Manman for a priestess, Queen, Doctor or Madame for New Orleans, Root Doctor or Conjure Woman for hoodoo.
- Use the Kreyòl diminutives properly: Ti means 'little' (Ti Jean, Ti Rosemène), Gran means 'elder' or 'grand', and Mèt means 'master'; pair them with a given name or a nature word like Lalin (moon), Zetwal (star) or Tonnerre (thunder).
- Keep spellings consistent within one story: either French (Erzulie, Damballah, Ogoun) or Kreyòl orthography (Ezili, Danbala, Ogou), not a mix.
- Lwa names are sacred to living practitioners. Use them for spirits, altars and invocations in your fiction; give your human characters ordinary Haitian or Creole names plus a title rather than naming them after a lwa.
- For a historical New Orleans setting, draw on 19th-century Creole given names (Philomène, Zéphyrine, Sosthène, Télesphore) and French Louisiana surnames; for modern Haiti, names like Wideline, Fritzner, Kesnel and Nadège feel right.
Frequently asked questions
What are voodoo priests and priestesses called?
In Haitian Vodou a priest is a houngan (also spelled oungan) and a priestess is a mambo (manbo); initiates call them Papa and Manman. A bòkò is a sorcerer who works with both hands. In New Orleans the historical titles were Voodoo Queen, Doctor, Mother and Madame, and hoodoo practitioners were called root doctors, conjure men or women, two-headed doctors and treaters (traiteurs in Cajun country).
What are the names of the main voodoo spirits (lwa)?
The most widely served lwa are Papa Legba (gatekeeper), Damballa and Ayida Wedo (serpent and rainbow), Erzulie Freda and Ezili Dantor (love and motherhood), Ogou Feray (iron and war), Agwe and Lasirenn (the sea), Azaka (farming), Simbi (water and magic), Gran Bwa (the forest), and the Gede family of the dead led by Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte.
Is it okay to use these names for a fictional character or Halloween costume?
Vodou is a living religion, so treat it the way you would any faith: human characters can carry authentic Haitian or Creole names and titles such as Mambo or Houngan, while the lwa are best used as the spirits they are rather than as character names. Avoid stereotypes about dolls and curses; real practice centres on healing, ancestors and community.
What is the difference between Haitian Vodou names and New Orleans Voodoo names?
Haitian names use Kreyòl and French—Papa Legba, Mambo Yvrose Saint-Fleur, Ti Jean—while New Orleans names reflect Louisiana Creole culture and English titles: Queen Marie Laveau, Doctor John, Madame Odile Lacroix, Mother Thibodeaux. The generator includes both so you can match the setting.
