Generate wight names for barrow-dwellers and grave guardians in games, tabletop campaigns and stories: Old English names with a mound or a grave gift like Aethelric of the Long Barrow and Wulfhere Ring-Hoarder, titles like The King in the Chalk, fallen knights like Sir Odo the Unshriven and ranks like Hoard-Warden Leofwine.

About wight names

Wight comes from Old English wiht, which meant only a creature or living being. The undead sense is modern: translators and fantasy writers tied the word to the dead who lie in burial mounds and guard what was buried with them, and tabletop games turned the wight into a kind of undead that drains life and commands lesser dead. A wight name should say whose grave it is and what the wight will not give up.

Most of this list is in English dress. Old English had two words for a burial mound, beorg and hlaw, which survive as barrow and as the low of many place names, so the dead here lie in barrows, lows, tumps and knolls: Aethelric of the Long Barrow, Wulfthryth of the Hazel Low. Others are named for their grave goods (Wulfhere Ring-Hoarder), for a title with no name left (The King in the Chalk) or for dying unshriven, without confession (Sir Odo the Unshriven).

The rest covers hill-fort chieftains with Welsh, old British and Pictish names (Cadwallon of the Ringed Hill), older dead from the stone chambers (The Flint King), frost wights, women of the mound, ranked captains (Hoard-Warden Leofwine), the names a village gives the thing in the field (Old Coldfingers) and single names like Turfmantle.

How to choose wight names

  • Decide what the wight guards before you name it. A hoard suits a grave-goods byname like Eadric Cup-Clutcher or Wulfgar Nine-Rings, and a place suits a mound name like Ealhmund of the Disc Barrow.
  • Build a whole barrow from the ranks. Put Risen Ceorl Totta and Door-Ward Ceolmund in the passage, Wight-Captain Wulfgar at the chamber door and The Crowned One Below at the end.
  • Give players the folk name first. Villagers warn of Old Coldfingers or Him Under the Hill long before anyone reads the name Aethelstan Gold-Buckle on a sword.
  • Match the name to the landscape. Chalk and down names suit southern hills (The Wight of Greyweather Down), tor and moor names suit granite uplands (The Sleeper of Crowstone Tor), and frost names like Uhtred Rime-Hand suit a northern pass.
  • For a Dungeons & Dragons wight that leads other undead, pick a commander: Captain Dravos of the Pale Company, Marshal Edrith of the Shambling Guard or Master of Twelve Skeletons.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wight?

The word is Old English wiht, a creature or being, and for centuries it could mean any living thing or person. In modern fantasy it means a dead lord who stays in the burial mound with his treasure, and in Dungeons & Dragons it is a kind of undead that drains life and commands lesser dead. The names here fit both: Cenred Blade-Bedded for the mound, Varrek the Life-Drinker for the dungeon.

What is the difference between a wight and a draugr?

They are close cousins. The draugr is the walking dead of the Old Norse sagas, and a draugr that stays in its mound does what a barrow-wight does. This list keeps to Old English, Welsh and tabletop styles, such as Leofric the Oath-Fast and Cynan Rampart-Keeper, and Norse names with saga bynames are on the draugr page.

Are the Old English names on this list real?

The given names are. Aethelric, Wulfhere, Eadgyth, Leofwine and the rest are recorded Old English names, and the hill-fort chieftains carry Welsh, old British and Pictish names. The bynames, titles, barrows and places are invented for this list, and although many of the given names were also borne by kings and saints, no entry is meant as a portrait of one. The commanders in the tabletop style, such as Morvane Ashgauntlet, have invented fantasy names.

Are there female wight names?

Yes. Women were buried under mounds with rich goods too, and the list has ladies and queens throughout: Lady Eadgyth Under-Hill, Aethelflaed of the Amber Beads, Aelfgifu Peace-Weaver, The Queen Under the Clover and Dame Hawise the Unhouseled.
