Generate oracle names for prophets, sibyls, seers and fantasy characters who speak for the gods: classical Delphic names, epithet-style titles like Vessenya the Far-Eyed, and place-bound titles such as the Oracle of the Iron Lake.

About oracle names

Oracle names carry a built-in tension: the person is ordinary, but the voice is not. The historical model is Delphi, where every priestess who spoke for Apollo took the same office-name, Pythia, and her own name was rarely recorded. The sibyls followed a similar pattern, known by place rather than family (the Cumaean, the Erythraean, the Tiburtine), and the few personal names that survive, Herophile, Phemonoe, Deiphobe, sound like titles themselves. Elsewhere the seer was a named individual with a reputation: Tiresias, Cassandra, Calchas, the Germanic prophetess Veleda, the Norse völva Thorbjorg.

That gives you three workable styles. A plain name with classical or archaic phonology (lots of open vowels, th, ph, -ia and -eia endings) reads as authentic. A name plus epithet (Ilvesha Moon-Reader, Orvane the Dreamspeaker) tells the listener what kind of sight the character has. A place-title (the Oracle of the Iron Lake, the Salt Oracle) works when the oracle is more institution than person, which is how most cultures actually treated them.

The names here mix all three, drawing on Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic, Mesopotamian, West African, Mesoamerican and East Asian traditions of prophecy, plus fantasy and science-fiction oracles for games and fiction. Pick the register that matches how your world treats its seers: revered office, wandering outcast, or machine.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the oracle is a person or an office. Offices get place-titles (the Oracle of Greyharrow); people get names, and famous people get epithets added by others.
  • Epithets should describe the method of sight: ash-reader, star-counter, dream-walker, laurel-eater. Vague words like 'mystic' or 'wise' tell the reader nothing.
  • For a grounded historical feel, borrow phonology rather than actual names: Greek -eia and -oe endings, Norse -hild and -dis, Akkadian -tu and -sun.
  • Oracles in fiction are often unwelcome. A slightly unsettling name (the Hollow Oracle, She Who Speaks Once) signals that the truth they tell is not comfortable.
  • If the oracle is an AI or construct, name it after the old tradition (Delphi, Pythia, Sibyl, Cassandra) so the role is obvious the moment it is introduced.

Frequently asked questions

What were real oracles actually called?

At Delphi the priestess was simply the Pythia, a title held by successive women whose personal names were rarely recorded. Sibyls were known by location (Cumaean, Erythraean, Delphic) and a handful of personal names survive, such as Herophile and Deiphobe. Named individual seers in myth include Tiresias, Cassandra, Calchas, Manto and Mopsus, while history records the Germanic seeress Veleda and the Norse völva Thorbjorg.

What is the difference between an oracle, a seer and a prophet?

Strictly, an oracle is a place or institution through which a god answers questions, and by extension the person who delivers the answer. A seer has the sight personally, whether through dreams, omens or trance. A prophet speaks on behalf of a deity, often uninvited. In fiction the words overlap freely, so choose the one whose connotation fits: oracle sounds formal and consulted, seer sounds solitary, prophet sounds urgent.

Can I use these names for a D&D or Pathfinder character?

Yes. The name-plus-epithet style (Kaelith Veilsinger, Garreth Nine-Omens) suits a divination wizard, oracle class, cleric of a knowledge domain or any NPC the party consults. The place-titles work well for quest hooks, since 'seek the Oracle of the Thorn Maze' gives players a destination and a mystery at once.

How do I name a female oracle versus a male one?

Historically most famous oracles were women, so feminine classical names (ending in -a, -e, -ia) read as the default, while male seers tend to be named in the Tiresias and Calchas mould. For fantasy, the epithet carries the character and the given name can go either way; the list includes male, female and deliberately ungendered titles like the Mouth of the Mountain.
