About murloc names
Murlocs are the gurgling, bug-eyed fish-folk of Warcraft's shorelines, and their names come in two layers. The first is the sound. A murloc's own name is a wet, growled run of m, r, g and l, written the way players hear the famous cry: Mrgla, Grmlok, Urglum. The second layer is the label other races give them. In World of Warcraft a murloc is mostly known by tribe and job, a compound of water words followed by a role, as in Bluegill Raider, Greymist Coastrunner or Saltscale Oracle.
The largest group follows that tribe and role pattern with new tribes: Brinefin, Kelpscale, Shoalgill, Mudtide and dozens more, each with its oracles, tidehunters, netters and egg-tenders. Around them sit gurgle names (kept to the ones you can say aloud), pet names for hatchlings, named elders in the manner of Old Murk-Eye, and knights of the shallows in the vein of Hearthstone's Sir Finley Mrrgglton.
The last group is jokes: fish puns and murloc wordplay for Hearthstone decks, guilds and alts, such as Kelp Wanted, Shoal Patrol and Out of Murloc. A dozen names from the games are included for reference, and the rest are new names written in the same style.
How to choose murloc names
- For a battle pet or a hunter pet, short and squelchy wins. Squelky, Finky, Burbly and Smolt fit on a nameplate and sound like something small that follows you around.
- Build your own tribe from the pattern: one shore or water word, then fin, gill, scale, tide or murk, then a job. Change either half of Brinefin Oracle and you have a tribe nobody else in your guild is using.
- Keep a vowel in a gurgle name. Mrgla and Urglum can be said in voice chat; a string of bare consonants looks right and gets you called "the murloc" all night.
- World of Warcraft character names are a single word of letters, 12 at most, so pick a one-word form such as Kelpscale or Murgoth for a character and save the titled and two-word names for pets, decks and guilds.
- A deck or guild pun should land at a glance. Cod Squad, Net Loss and Flood the Board work because the joke is over in three words.

Which names on this list come from the games?
Twelve are listed for reference. Murky, Lurky, Gurky and Grunty are World of Warcraft companion pets, Old Murk-Eye and King Mrgl-Mrgl are named murlocs in the game, Sir Finley Mrrgglton and Morgl the Oracle come from Hearthstone, and Bluegill, Greymist, Saltscale and Winterfin are Warcraft tribes. The rest were written in the style for your own use; Warcraft has a great many murloc tribes, so a chance match with one of them is possible.
How do murloc tribe names work?
A tribe name is one compound word: something from the shore or the water, then a body part or a water word. Fin, gill, scale, tide and murk do most of the work, which gives Brinefin, Reefgill, Foamscale, Moontide and Deepmurk. Members are then called by tribe and job, so one camp can hold a Brinefin Oracle, a Brinefin Netter and a chieftain with a name of his own.
Can I use these for other fish-folk?
The tribe names, the roles and elders such as Old Three-Gills or Grandmother Gillrot suit any amphibious people in a tabletop campaign. The gurgle names are tied to the murloc sound, so for kuo-toa or other fish-folk the Kuo-Toa and Fishman generators on this site are a closer fit.
