My Little Pony names have a recognizable shape. Almost every pony in Friendship Is Magic is called by a two-word phrase that hints at their talent or cutie mark: Twilight Sparkle studies the magic of the stars, Rainbow Dash flies fast, Applejack farms apples, Rarity makes rare and beautiful things, and Pinkie Pie bakes. The words themselves are ordinary English, drawn from nature, food, weather, music, crafts and gems, and the charm comes from how neatly they describe the pony's role.

Within that pattern there are recognizable sub-styles. Earth ponies lean rustic and edible (Granny Smith, Cheerilee, Sugar Belle, Caramel), pegasi lean toward sky and speed (Cloudchaser, Thunderlane, Fleetfoot, Lightning Dust), and unicorns lean toward light, magic and elegance (Starlight Glimmer, Moondancer, Fancy Pants, Twinkleshine). Villains break the mold with single, harder words like Discord, Sombra, Tirek and Tempest Shadow. Generation 5 continues the tradition with Sunny Starscout, Izzy Moonbow, Hitch Trailblazer, Zipp Storm and Pipp Petals.

A good original pony name therefore starts from the cutie mark. Decide what the pony is best at, list a few nouns connected to it, and pair one with an evocative second word (Honey Drizzle, Compass Rose, Page Turner). Alliteration (Sunny Starscout, Coco Pommel) and puns on real phrases (Cloud Nine, Silver Lining) both feel very at home in Equestria.
