Missile Name Generator
Names for missiles, torpedoes, interceptors and warheads
Generate names for missiles, torpedoes, interceptors, bombs and warheads in wargames, military fiction and strategy games, from Nightjar, Stormlance and Thunderclap to Ashfall Mk II, Kestrel-M and KVX-20 Mantis. A small share are labeled as real missiles, and other plain words on the list can have real namesakes too.
About missile names
Real missiles are named to a handful of patterns, and this list follows them. Snakes and stinging animals gave us Sidewinder and Stinger, older weapons gave Tomahawk, Javelin and Harpoon, and birds gave Sparrow and Shrike. Exocet is French for flying fish, which suits a missile that skims the sea, and the British torpedoes Spearfish and Tigerfish take fish names. NATO reporting names for Soviet missiles were plain words chosen by first letter: A for air-to-air, K for air-to-surface, G for surface-to-air and S for surface-to-surface.
The 1,000 names here are for wargames, military fiction, strategy and shooter games, model kits and worldbuilding. They cover snakes and stingers, birds of prey, spears and blades, storms, myth, reporting-style code words, class-flavored names for air-to-air, anti-tank, surface-to-air, anti-ship, cruise and ballistic missiles, torpedoes, interceptors, name-plus-mark entries such as Ashfall Mk II and KVX-20 Mantis, game bombs and warheads, and sci-fi warheads for space settings.
A small share are real missiles, each marked as real with its class. That label does not mean the others have no real namesake: plain animal, weapon, storm and myth words very often belong to a missile somewhere already, so search any name before you publish with it.
How to choose missile names
- Give each force in your setting one rule per class so a reader can tell the weapon from its name: small quick birds such as Wagtail, Pipit and Linnet for air-to-air missiles, fish such as Grayling, Zander and Turbot for torpedoes.
- For radio chatter and table talk, pick code words of one or two syllables. Gable, Shovel and Ketch are quicker to say in a tense scene than a three-word title.
- Marks and blocks give a weapon a history. Ashfall Mk II implies a Mk I that came before it, which is handy for upgrade trees in strategy games and for an older arsenal in fiction.
- Search a name before you put it in a published novel or game. Many plain words are already real missiles, which is fine at a home table and worth knowing before you print.
- Use the labeled real names only where your setting wants them, such as a Cold War scenario. In a made-up world, a name on the same pattern keeps the tone without pointing at real hardware.
Frequently asked questions
How do real missiles get their names?
Most follow a few patterns: snakes and stinging animals (Sidewinder, Stinger), older weapons (Tomahawk, Javelin, Harpoon), birds (Sparrow, Shrike) and sea life, as with Exocet, the French word for flying fish. NATO also gave Soviet missiles plain reporting names whose first letter showed the class, such as A for air-to-air and G for surface-to-air.
Are the names on this list real missiles?
A small share are labeled as real in parentheses with the class, for example Sidewinder (real air-to-air missile) and Exocet (real anti-ship missile). The other entries follow the same naming patterns and are meant for games and fiction, but an unlabeled entry can still be a real weapon. We have not compared them with any list of real weapons, and plain animal or storm words are often in use somewhere, so search a name before you publish with it.
What is a good name for a torpedo or an interceptor?
Several navies name torpedoes after fish and sea creatures, and the list has Lancetfish, Viperfish, Porbeagle and Deep Runner among others. Interceptors read best as guards and catchers: Shortstop, Backstop, Portcullis and Shieldwall all say that something is being stopped.
Does the list include bomb and warhead names?
Yes, as a modest share for games and fiction. There are game-style entries such as Big Thud, Crater Maker, Glidewing Bomb and Hammerfall Warhead, and sci-fi warheads such as Nova Lance and Singularity Seed for space settings.
