Tank Name Generator

Tank names come in three layers. The first is the model name given by the manufacturer or army: British tanks traditionally start with C (Churchill, Cromwell, Comet, Centurion, Chieftain, Challenger), German tanks are big cats (Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Puma, Luchs), and American tanks honour generals (Sherman, Pershing, Patton, Abrams, Bradley). Self-propelled guns have their own traditions, such as the British clergy series (Priest, Sexton, Bishop, Abbot) and German insects and animals (Wespe, Hummel, Nashorn, Elefant).

The second layer is the name the crew paints on the barrel or hull. Real examples include Cobra King, the Sherman that broke through to Bastogne; Fury, from the film; Bonecrusher, Blockbuster, and In the Mood from Second World War units where every tank in a company started with the same letter as the company (A Company: Achilles, Ajax, Amazon). Crews favoured pin-up girls, puns (Miss Behavin'), gambling terms, and boasts about toughness. British regiments still name individual vehicles this way.

The third layer is fiction and wargaming, where Warhammer 40k, BattleTech, and World of Tanks lean on big animals, mythic monsters, and heavy nouns like Juggernaut and Vindicator. Our list covers all three so you can name a real-feeling model, an individual crew vehicle, or a sci-fi war machine.
