Generate military general names with the correct star rank attached: American and Commonwealth generals, British field marshals, French and Russian marshals, German, Latin American, Asian and African commanders, plus a set of high generals and warmasters for fantasy and sci-fi armies.

About military general names

A general's name has to carry authority before the character says a word, and in practice that comes from the rank more than the name. Real generals are called Harlan Westbrook or Ousmane Coulibaly, not Blaze Thunderhawk; the gravitas comes from Lieutenant General, Field Marshal or Marshal in front of an ordinary surname. The rank also tells the reader a lot: a Brigadier General (one star) leads a brigade, a Major General a division, a Lieutenant General a corps, and a four-star General sits at the top. Britain and the Commonwealth use Brigadier without the word General and cap their system with Field Marshal, while France, Russia and Poland use Marshal as the highest rank.

Surnames do the rest. Longer names with a slightly formal ring (Pemberton, Hargreaves, Villafuerte, Strelnikov, Matsudaira) read as senior officers, while short punchy surnames fit younger field commanders. Particles such as von, de or Sir suit a nineteenth-century or alternate-history army, and the national form should match the rank: a Generalmajor belongs in a German-speaking force, a Général de division in a French one.

The list mixes modern Western generals with Latin American, Slavic, Turkish, Arab, South Asian, East Asian and African commanders, adds the British and continental titles, and includes High Generals, Lord Generals and Warmasters for fantasy and science-fiction armies.

How to choose military general names

  • Pick the rank to fit the command: a Brigadier General runs a brigade, a Major General a division, a Lieutenant General a corps, and a four-star General a whole army or theatre. Giving a platoon to a general breaks immersion instantly.
  • Match the title to the nation. Field Marshal is British, German and Commonwealth; Marshal is French, Russian and Polish; Generalissimo and Grand Marshal belong to dictatorships and alternate histories; Brigadier without General is British.
  • Use the surname alone in dialogue after the first introduction. Staff officers say 'the General' or 'General Halloran', never the full name, and soldiers rarely learn a general's first name at all.
  • For a villain or rival commander, choose a surname with hard consonants (Kessler, Strelnikov, Grimshaw); for a beloved commander, softer sounds like Fairweather or Holloway land better.
  • If you are naming generals for a strategy game or a fictional army, vary the origins across the roster so the high command looks like a real country's officer corps rather than a single family.

Frequently asked questions

What are the different general ranks and how do they rank against each other?

In US-style systems the order is Brigadier General (one star), Major General (two), Lieutenant General (three), General (four) and, in wartime only, General of the Army (five). Confusingly, a Major General outranks a Brigadier General but is outranked by a Lieutenant General, a leftover from the old title Sergeant Major General. British forces use Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General, General and Field Marshal.

Are any of these real generals?

No. The names combine common given names and surnames from each region into fictional officers for novels, games and screenplays. If a name happens to match a real person it is coincidental.

What is the difference between a Marshal and a Field Marshal?

Both are the highest army rank in their countries. Field Marshal is the British, German and Commonwealth title, usually shown with crossed batons; Marshal (or Marshal of France, Marshal of the Soviet Union) is the French, Russian and Polish equivalent. Either sits above a four-star General.

Can I use these names for a fantasy or sci-fi army?

Yes. The list includes High General, Lord General, Warmaster, Grand General and Supreme Commander titles paired with invented surnames. You can also take any realistic name and swap in a title that fits your setting, since the rank-plus-surname pattern reads as military in almost any world.
