Metal Gear Name Generator

Metal Gear codenames follow a few very recognizable formulas, and once you know them you can invent one that sounds like it came out of FOXHOUND. The classic pattern is a state or trait plus an animal: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis, Decoy Octopus. Metal Gear Solid 3's Cobra Unit swapped the animal for a raw emotion with the definite article (The Pain, The Fear, The End, The Fury, The Sorrow, The Boss), while MGS4's Beauty and the Beast unit fused the two by attaching an emotional verb to the FOXHOUND animals (Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf, Screaming Mantis).

The Phantom Pain added the most flexible pattern of all. Every Diamond Dogs recruit is assigned an adjective-plus-animal codename that reads like a random draw, and it works because the adjectives are odd and specific (Flaming Buffalo, Silent Mastodon, Hollow Sparrow, Bitter Hound). Kojima also loves ironic real names (Hot Coldman, Huey Emmerich, Kazuhira Miller), literary references (Ishmael, Pequod, Iroquois Pliskin), and Latin or French unit names (Militaires Sans Frontières, Les Enfants Terribles).
