Generate syndicate names for crime families, smuggling rings, cyberpunk megacorp cartels, and shadow networks. Names range from real-world-style organised crime (families, commissions, triads, cartels) to sleek sci-fi corporate syndicates.

About syndicate names

'Syndicate' entered crime writing in the 1930s, when newspapers described the National Crime Syndicate, the alliance of Italian-American and Jewish mob figures who ran gambling, labour rackets, and Murder, Inc. Real criminal syndicates almost never call themselves anything dramatic. They are named after a family (the Gambino family), a place (the Chicago Outfit, the Sinaloa Cartel), a euphemism (the Commission, the Combination, Cosa Nostra, 'this thing of ours'), or a legitimate front (a carting company, a linen supplier, a longshore association). Yakuza groups end in -gumi or -kai, Russian brotherhoods are bratva, Chinese triads use society names like Sun Yee On and Wo Shing Wo, and Nigerian confraternities call themselves 'axes' and 'buccaneers'.

Fiction adds a second layer: the sleek shadow corporation. Cyberpunk and space opera syndicates (Arasaka, Black Sun, Crimson Dawn, the Pyke Syndicate) fuse corporate vocabulary (Holdings, Consortium, Concern) with a single dark image. Both approaches share one rule: understatement. A name like 'The Concern' or 'The Interests' is more chilling than 'The Death Cartel' because it implies people who do not need to advertise.

The names here move through mob families, brotherhoods and triads, cartels, coded euphemisms, front companies, evocative ring names, and cyberpunk and sci-fi syndicates, so you can pick a register that suits your setting and let the reader infer the rest.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose the culture first: family surnames for Italian-American mobs, -gumi or -kai for yakuza, bratva for Russian groups, cartel for Latin American organisations, and 'Firm' for London.
  • Give the syndicate a legitimate front (freight, waste, linen, vending, casinos) and use that as its public name; it is how real organised crime hides and it generates plot.
  • Underplay it. Names like the Commission, the Arrangement, or the Concern feel more real and more menacing than anything with 'Death' or 'Blood' in it.
  • For sci-fi or cyberpunk, combine one corporate noun (Consortium, Holdings, Concern) with one hard image (Obsidian, Zero-Day, Helix).
  • Decide what insiders call it versus what police call it; the two names, e.g. 'the Family' and 'the Moretti Crime Family', can reveal a character's position with one word.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a syndicate, a cartel, and a mafia?

A syndicate is any organised alliance running criminal enterprises; a cartel is technically a group of producers controlling a market, a label the press applied to Latin American drug organisations; and mafia originally means the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, later extended to similar family-based groups. In fiction they overlap, but the word you pick sets the culture.

How are real crime syndicates named?

Usually by outsiders. Police and journalists attach a family name, a home city, or a founder to the group (the Bonanno family, the Chicago Outfit, D-Company), while members use euphemisms like 'the Family', 'the Firm', 'the Life', or 'this thing of ours'.

Can I use these syndicate names in my novel or game?

Yes. The invented names are free to use. A few real historical groups and franchise names (the Yakuza families, Arasaka, Black Sun, Crimson Dawn) appear as adapted homages; treat those as inspiration and avoid using trademarked franchise names in commercial work.

What makes a cyberpunk syndicate name work?

Corporate blandness with a dark edge. Real megacorp names (Arasaka, Militech, Weyland-Yutani) sound like Fortune 500 companies, and shadow syndicates borrow that: a founder surname or two, a neutral noun like Holdings or Concern, and at most one ominous word.
