Masculine barn and show names for stallions and geldings
500 names for stallions, geldings and colts, from barn names like Hank, Clyde and Roscoe to titled names like Sir Gawain, Mister Blue and Big John, show names like He's a Keeper and Tall Dark and Handsome, plus rulers, knights and stallion names from Spanish, Irish, German and Arabic.
About male horse names
A stallion is an adult male horse that has not been gelded, a gelding is one that has, and a colt is a young male. Geldings are the common case in most barns, and the everyday names they get are short and plain: Hank, Clyde, Roscoe, Walt, Monty. Many sound like a farmhand or somebody's uncle, which suits the steady gelding every yard relies on.
Show and registered names run longer and lean on masculine signals. The clearest is a title: Sir Gawain, Mister Blue, King Midas, Captain Courageous, Big John, His Lordship. The next is a phrase built on he, his, man or boy, the mirror of the she's names that mares get: He's a Keeper, Man of the Hour, That's My Boy. Some breed registries ask that a foal's name begin with a set letter, such as the first letter of the sire's name, so read the rules before you fall for one.
This list leaves mare and filly names out and is built from ten styles: barn names, titles, show-ring phrases, names of rulers and heroes, cowboy names, coat and marking names, and stallion names from four languages, Spanish, Irish, German and Arabic. The styles are mixed through the list, so every batch shows several at once.
How to choose male horse names
- Say the barn name the way you would call it at feeding time. One or two syllables with a hard consonant (Hank, Jake, Clint, Monty) carry farther across a field than a long phrase.
- Pair a short barn name with a longer show name that contains it: Jack at home and Captain Jack in the ring, Percy in the field and Sir Percival on the entry form, Reggie in the stall and Sir Reginald on the rosette.
- Match the name to the horse in front of you. A quiet schoolmaster suits Gentle Giant, Mr. Dependable or Steady Eddie, while a colt with opinions can carry Daredevil, Firebrand or He's No Angel.
- For a breed with a home language, look there first: Rey or Lucero for an Andalusian, Faris or Najm for an Arabian, Fionn or Cormac for a Connemara, Fürst or Morgenstern for a Hanoverian.
- Before you register a name, read your registry's rules on length, punctuation and names already in use, and on whether a colt has to follow a set letter or his sire's line.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a stallion, a gelding and a colt?
A stallion is an adult male horse that has not been castrated, a gelding is a male that has, and a colt is a young male, up to four years old for most riders and up to five in racing. The name stays the same when a colt grows up or is gelded, so pick one that will still fit a full-grown horse: Atta Boy and Boy Wonder are sweet on a foal, while Augustus, King Solomon and Man of Honor age better.
What are good names for a male horse?
For the barn, try Hank, Clyde, Roscoe, Monty, Jake or Winston. For the show ring, try a title or a phrase, such as Sir Lancelot, Captain Midnight, He's a Keeper or Tall Dark and Handsome. The list is built around names that read masculine, so you can reroll freely without landing on a mare's name.
Are there stallion names from other languages?
Yes. From Spanish there are Rey (king), Lucero (bright star), Azabache (jet black) and Alazán (sorrel). From Arabic there are Faris (horseman or knight), Amir (prince), Najm (star) and Barq (lightning). The Irish names include Fionn, Cormac and Capall Mór, which means big horse, and the German ones include Hengst and Wallach, the words for stallion and gelding, and Rappe, a black horse.
Can I use these as registered or show names?
Entries such as Knight in Shining Armor and Master of Ceremonies are written in show-ring style, and many would suit a registration form. Each registry has its own rules on length, characters and names already taken, though, and you need to check those yourself. The Jockey Club, for one, allows a Thoroughbred's name no more than 18 characters, spaces included, which rules out the longest ones here.
