Generate male barbarian names for D&D and sword-and-sorcery heroes: blunt given names like Brakk and Korgan, tribesmen like Harsk of the Elk Clan, deed names like Havrek Oxthrower and earned names like Outran-the-Avalanche.

About male barbarian names

A barbarian hero usually carries three pieces of name, and only the first is given at birth. That first piece is short and blunt: one or two syllables, stressed at the front and closed by a hard consonant. Brakk, Durn, Thrag and Thorek read as men's names in this register because they end on k, n or g, not on the -a, -hild, -dis or -run that sword-and-sorcery borrows from Norse for its women.

The second piece says whose he is. Tribal names put kin and homeland after the given name: Harsk of the Elk Clan, Kjeld son of Ulmar, Bodvin Harksson, Dunnoch mac Brude. The third piece is earned. A byname comes from other people, after a deed, a scar or a habit, so it can be proud (Ulbrand Gatebreaker), plain (Rurk the Red) or a joke at his expense (Durrek the Small, Forgot-His-Shield). Whole-phrase names such as Outran-the-Avalanche work the same way and suit tribes that use no surnames at all.

The list mixes all of these with titles a man can hold, from Chief and Thane to Khan and Clan-Father, plus a set of saga-style Norse names with new bynames. It leaves out the women's names and the historical warlords that fill the general barbarian list.

How to choose male barbarian names

  • Say the given name as a battle cry first. If it cannot be shouted in one breath, the way Brakk, Hrun or Korgan can, pick a shorter one.
  • Start a new character with a tribe byname such as Ovrin of the Lynx Tribe and let the campaign hand him an epithet later. Tegg the Quick should have done something quick.
  • Keep one byname form per tribe so kinsmen sound related: son of or -sson for northern raiders, mac for hill clans, of the Clan for totem tribes, a title such as Khan for steppe riders.
  • An ironic byname gives a big man a personality at once. The tallest warrior in the band is Durrek the Small, and the loudest is Lukar the Whisper.
  • For a D&D totem barbarian, match the tribe animal to the totem: Grumnar Bear-Totem, Fenn Wolf-Totem or Othgar of the Cave Bear Tribe tell the table what he does before he rages.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a barbarian name sound male?

In the Norse-flavored register most fantasy barbarians use, men's names close on a hard consonant (Brakk, Thorek, Skeld) and take son-of bynames such as Bodvin Harksson, while women's names tend to end in -a, -hild or -dis. Titles help as well: Chief, Thane, Jarl, Khan and Clan-Father all mark a man in this list.

How does a barbarian earn his epithet?

It is given by others, never chosen. A deed gives Ulbrand Gatebreaker or Balthor the Twice-Dead, a look gives Rurk the Red or Kurn the Broken-Nosed, and a bad day gives Forgot-His-Shield. In a campaign, wait for the moment the other players start calling the character something and keep that.

Do these names work for a D&D barbarian?

Yes. The short given names suit human, half-orc and goliath barbarians, the tribe bynames fit outlander backgrounds, and entries such as Hartmund Elk-Totem and Storm-Herald Bjarnulf nod to barbarian paths. The names are not tied to any one setting, so they drop into any world.

How is this list different from the general barbarian name generator?

The general page mixes men and women and leans on saga heroes and historical war leaders. This one is men only, mostly invented, and built around tribal naming: a blunt given name, then a tribe or a father, then an earned byname.
