About maid names

Maid names in fiction almost always signal a period and a class. In Victorian and Edwardian houses, junior maids were called by short, plain first names, often diminutives like Elsie, Nellie, Daisy, Polly, or Kitty; employers sometimes even renamed a new housemaid to a house name so they would not have to learn a fresh one. Senior staff earned surnames and courtesy titles: a housekeeper was Mrs. regardless of marriage (Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Danvers), a lady's maid was addressed by surname alone (Baxter, O'Brien), and the cook was Cook or Mrs. Patmore. Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs, and Rebecca all follow these conventions closely.

Outside Britain the pattern shifts. French maids in comedy and farce carry bright names like Fifi, Mimi, or Colette; German and Austrian household staff read as Gretchen, Liesl, or Anneliese; Russian country houses had their Mashas and Dunyas. Anime and manga maids form their own tradition, from Rem and Ram in Re:Zero to Mey-Rin in Black Butler, using either soft Japanese given names or European ones with a Gothic edge.

A convincing maid name is unshowy. Two syllables, an ordinary or slightly old-fashioned surname, and the right title for rank will place a character below stairs instantly; the flower and virtue names (Ivy, Violet, Patience, Mercy) common among working-class girls of the period do the rest.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to rank: junior maids by first name (Daisy, Elsie), ladies' maids by surname (Miss Baxter), housekeepers as Mrs. plus surname (Mrs. Medlock), regardless of marital status.
  • Working-class Victorian and Edwardian surnames were often regional; northern English names like Ramsbottom, Postlethwaite, and Grimshaw, or Irish names like Mulcahy and Feeney, add realism to a manor's staff.
  • For an anime or maid-cafe character, pair a soft Japanese given name with a delicate surname (Sakura Hoshino, Rin Sakuragi) or use a single European name with a Gothic edge (Wilhelmina, Emilia).
  • Diminutives and nicknames (Tuppence, Tibby, Young Sal) suggest a servant everyone in the house is fond of; a stiff full name suggests one nobody dares tease.
  • Avoid names that would have been considered upper-class at the time (Arabella, Georgiana) for a scullery maid unless the mismatch is the point of the character.

Frequently asked questions

What were Victorian maids typically called?

Housemaids and kitchen maids went by plain first names or diminutives such as Mary, Sarah, Elsie, Nellie, Polly, and Kitty. Some employers gave every housemaid the same house name (often Mary or Jane) for convenience. Senior servants were addressed by surname or as Mrs., so the housekeeper might be Mrs. Fairfax and the lady's maid simply Baxter.

Why is a housekeeper called Mrs. even if she is unmarried?

It was a courtesy title marking her authority over the female staff, in the same way the cook was Mrs. Patmore in Downton Abbey and the housekeeper in Rebecca was Mrs. Danvers. Butlers, by contrast, were addressed by surname alone.

Are there anime and maid-cafe style names in this list?

Yes. Look for Japanese given-name-plus-surname combinations like Sakura Hoshino and Ayame Fujimoto, canonical references such as Rem and Ram (Re:Zero) and Mey-Rin (Black Butler), and Gothic-European names like Emilia Rosewater and Wilhelmina Carmel that suit the genre.

Can I use these maid names in my novel, game, or cosplay persona?

Yes. Original names are free to use anywhere. A few entries are characters from Downton Abbey, Rebecca, and various anime, included as reference points for the conventions; use them as models rather than reusing them for original characters.
