Sharur, the enchanted talking mace of the Sumerian god Ninurta, is the oldest. Hindu epics name Vishnu's gada Kaumodaki and give Bhima and Hanuman legendary maces. In games, D&D has the Mace of Disruption, Mace of Smiting and Mace of Terror, Skyrim has the Mace of Molag Bal, and Pathfinder, Warcraft and Diablo all have named maces and flails among their unique weapons.

Tie it to the deity or the church. A title like Hand of Ilmater, Lathander's Dawn, Torag's Forge or Mace of the Iron Synod names the god or the order; a single liturgical word like Benediction, Absolution, Vesper or Requiem sounds sacred without naming anyone; and an ironic name like The Sermon or The Tithe suits a cynical war-priest. A mace is a rigid shaft with a heavy head, often flanged or knobbed. A morningstar is a mace with a spiked ball head (the word is also used loosely for spiked flails). A flail has the striking head on a chain or hinge, which is why flail names here mention chains, apples and threshing. Names are interchangeable in practice, but mentioning spikes or chains makes the weapon type clear.
