Location Name Generator
Random place and location names for any story or map
Generate location names for novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and worldbuilding maps: towns, landmarks, ruins, roads, stations, natural features and named buildings, from gritty real-world spots to fantasy and sci-fi sites.
About location names
A good location name does two jobs at once: it tells the reader what kind of place this is, and it hints at what happened there. Real place names are mostly a descriptive word plus a feature word, which is why English is full of Blackwaters, Ashfords and Long Meadows. The feature word (ford, bridge, moor, cove, pass, station, quarter) sets expectations about terrain and scale, while the first half adds color, ownership (Tanner's Ford, Kessler's Reach) or a dash of history (Gallows Hill, Sorrow's Landing). "The" names usually mark a single site rather than a settlement: The Sunken Chapel, The Old Telephone Exchange.
This list mixes registers so you can pull whatever a scene needs: English and Celtic-flavored villages and moors, locations in Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, Nordic and Slavic styles, modern spots like truck stops and rail depots, natural features such as arches, reefs and sinkholes, and fantasy and sci-fi sites from ruined towers to orbital shipyards. One or two foreign-flavored names on an otherwise English map make a region feel like it has borders and a history.
When naming several locations for one map, keep feature words consistent with the landscape (no coves inland, no passes on a plain) and vary the first halves so your world does not read like a list of colors plus nouns.
How to choose location names
- Match the feature word to the terrain: ford, mill and bridge for rivers; cove, quay and strand for coasts; pass, tor and ridge for uplands; station, depot and plaza for modern or sci-fi settings.
- Use possessives (Halloran's Cove, Caldwell's Folly) for places founded or claimed by a person; they imply a backstory you can reveal later.
- Reserve "The" names for unique sites, not towns. "The Weeping Quarry" is a destination; "Weeping Quarry" sounds like a village next to it.
- For a believable region, pick one language flavor for most names and let only border towns or old ruins use a different style.
- Say the name in a sentence of dialogue ("Meet me at ___ after dark"). If it trips the tongue or sounds like a joke, revise it.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of locations does this generator cover?
Settlements (villages, towns, ports), natural features (falls, passes, reefs, canyons, springs), named buildings and ruins (chapels, towers, mills, observatories), streets and districts, modern sites like truck stops and rail depots, and sci-fi outposts such as relay stations and orbital yards.
Can I use these location names in a published novel or commercial game?
Yes. The names are original or built from common descriptive words, and none are trademarked settings. A few resemble real small places simply because English place names follow predictable patterns; if you are worried about a specific one, a quick map search will tell you.
How do I make random location names feel like they belong to the same world?
Choose a dominant style (English countryside, Mediterranean, Nordic, industrial modern) for most of your map, keep feature words consistent with the terrain, and reuse a few shared elements, like a river name that appears in two towns downstream of each other.
Are these suitable for D&D and other tabletop campaigns?
Very much so. The fantasy-flavored entries (ruined towers, tombs, gates, fey crossings) work as dungeon and quest locations, while the plainer village and landmark names fill out a hex map or travel montage without sounding out of place.
