Generate anthology titles for collections of stories, poems, essays and comics by several hands, from Tales from the Salt Road and The Hollow Hill Reader to Thirteen Doors: Stories of the Uncanny. The list also covers annual volumes, class and charity books, and anthology shows and podcasts.

About anthology names

An anthology title has a job a novel title does not: it has to tell a browser that many pieces, usually by many hands, sit under one cover. The word comes from the Greek for a gathering of flowers, and most titles still signal the gathering in one of a few ways. A form word does it fastest (tales, stories, voices, reader, omnibus, treasury, miscellany, casebook, almanac). A subtitle does it with more precision, pairing an evocative phrase with a plain label, as in Thirteen Doors: Stories of the Uncanny. A count or a volume number does it too: Twelve Months, Twelve Writers or Best of the Far Counties, Volume One.

The list runs through those structures across the kinds of anthology people put together: "Tales of" and "Tales from" titles, genre collections for horror, fantasy, science fiction, romance and crime, poetry and spoken word gatherings, essays and nature writing, children's storybooks, school, class and writing group books, regional and community collections, charity and tribute volumes, comics and zine compilations, and anthology series for screen and audio in the tradition of The Twilight Zone, where every episode starts fresh.

All of the titles are invented for this page. A smaller share are plain titles with no form word, for editors who prefer to let the cover copy explain.

How to choose anthology names

  • Decide what the title has to announce first: the theme, the form or the group. Under One Roof: Stories of Home leads with theme, The Open Mic Omnibus with form, and The Tuesday Night Writers, Volume One with the group.
  • Pick the form word for its register. Treasury and storybook sound warm and suit children's and gift books, casebook and miscellany sound dry and bookish, reader and omnibus promise bulk, and sampler promises a taste.
  • If you expect a second book, build the series into the first title. A volume number, a year or an issue number, as in Harbor Lights Annual 2027 or Wide Margin Annual, Issue Zero, saves renaming later.
  • For a call for submissions, choose a title that tells writers what to send. A subtitle such as An Anthology of Night Shift Writing sets the brief better than a mood word alone.
  • Before you print, search your title in bookshop and library catalogs. The list has not been compared with published books, and a class or charity anthology is easier to find when no other book shares its name.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good anthology title?

It tells a reader at a glance that the book holds many pieces and what links them. Most titles do that with a form word, a subtitle or a number, as in The Gravedigger's Miscellany, Shelter: An Anthology for Housing Relief or Fifty Poets, One River. An evocative phrase in front of a plain label is the most common shape because one half attracts and the other explains.

What is the difference between an anthology and a collection?

In publishing usage an anthology usually gathers work by several authors around a theme, form, place or period, while a collection usually holds one author's stories, poems or essays. The titles here are written for the first kind, though many would also suit a single author's book. For one poet's book, the poetry book name generator is the closer fit.

Do these titles work for anthology shows and podcasts?

Yes, one group of titles is written for them. An anthology series tells a new story with new characters each episode or season, so its title leans on words like presents, hour, theater and playhouse. Examples from the list are The Lamplight Hour Presents, Static Theater: Audio Tales After Dark and Thirteen Rooms: An Anthology Series.

Can I use one of these titles for a class or charity anthology?

Yes, they are free to use. Titles such as Room 12 Writes: A Class Anthology and Pages for the Pantry: Stories to Feed a Town are meant to be adapted, so swap in your own room number, town or cause. Search the finished title online and in a library catalog before you print.
