About Latvian last names

Most Latvian families received a hereditary surname in the first half of the nineteenth century, after serfdom ended in Kurzeme and Vidzeme, and later in Latgale. Many took a word from the farm or the forest, often in the diminutive, which is why the country's most common names are small trees and hills: Bērziņš (little birch), Kalniņš (little hill), Ozoliņš (little oak), Liepiņš (little linden). Birds and animals are just as usual, as in Balodis (pigeon), Vanags (hawk) and Lācis (bear).

The list also holds trade names such as Kalējs (smith) and Mūrnieks (mason), patronymics in -sons such as Jansons, Latgalian names in -āns such as Rancāns, and surnames of German, Polish and Russian origin. Latvian writes every name as it sounds and gives it a Latvian ending, so Schmidt is Šmits, Rosenberg is Rozenbergs and Ivanov is Ivanovs.

Most entries stand in the masculine form, the one dictionaries cite. A woman's surname changes its ending: -s and -š usually become -a and -is becomes -e, so Bērziņš gives Bērziņa and Balodis gives Balode, while names in -sons take -sone. About an eighth of the entries are written in the feminine form, such as Siliņa and Rubene, and no surname appears in both forms. Names that are already feminine nouns, like Liepa, Egle and Roze, are the same for everyone.

How to choose Latvian last names

  • Keep the diacritics. The macron in ā, ē, ī and ū marks a long vowel, and ķ, ļ, ņ, š, ž and č are letters of their own. Bērziņš without them becomes Berzins, which is how the name looks on many foreign documents and suits an emigrant character.
  • Change the ending for a woman. From the masculine entries, Ozols becomes Ozola, Krūmiņš becomes Krūmiņa, Eglītis becomes Eglīte and Kalējs becomes Kalēja. From a feminine entry, go the other way: Rozīte is Rozītis for a man.
  • Use the ending to place a character. Names in -āns such as Laizāns and Slišāns point to Latgale in the east, while diminutives in -iņš and -ītis are at home all over Kurzeme and Vidzeme.
  • Do not lean on the meaning. Lācis means bear and Zaķis means hare, but the names are so ordinary that no Latvian reader expects the bearer to match.
  • Stress the first syllable when you read a name aloud. Š sounds like sh, č like ch, ž like the s in measure and ņ like the ny in canyon.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Latvian last names?

Bērziņš, Kalniņš and Ozoliņš lead most counts, followed closely by names such as Jansons, Ozols, Liepiņš, Krūmiņš, Balodis and Eglītis. All of these are in the list. Ivanovs, a Russian surname written with the Latvian ending, is also among the most common in the country.

Why do so many Latvian surnames end in -iņš or -ītis?

Both are diminutive endings, the Latvian way of saying little or dear. Kalns is a hill and Kalniņš a little hill; egle is a spruce and Eglītis its diminutive. When surnames were handed out, the diminutive of a tree, a bird or a landmark near the farm was a favorite choice.

How do Latvian surnames change for women?

The ending follows the gender of the bearer. Masculine -s and -š become -a, -is becomes -e and -sons becomes -sone, so the list's feminine entries include Strazdiņa, Zvejniece, Pētersone and Petrova. A wife, a husband and their children share one surname, each in the form that fits.

Why do Latvian surnames end in -s?

Because -s, -š and -is are the endings of masculine nouns in Latvian, and a surname behaves like any other noun. Foreign names take the ending too, which is why the list has Millers, Vāgners, Smirnovs and Dombrovskis. Drop the ending and you are close to how the name sounds in its language of origin, though the spelling stays Latvian: Vāgners is Wagner and Šmits is Schmidt.
