Latvian Name Generator

Latvian names follow strict grammatical rules that make them instantly recognizable. Every name, first or last, must carry a gendered ending: men's names end in -s, -š or -is (Jānis, Kārlis, Andris) and women's end in -a or -e (Līga, Ilze, Anete). The same applies to surnames, so a family named Bērziņš will have a father Jānis Bērziņš, a mother Māra Bērziņa, and daughters who are also Bērziņa. Even foreign names get Latvianized this way in official documents, which is why Bill Gates becomes Bils Geitss.

The most common Latvian surnames come from nature and the countryside. Bērziņš (little birch), Kalniņš (little hill), Ozoliņš (little oak), Liepiņš (little linden), Krūmiņš (little bush) and Balodis (pigeon) top the list, and the diminutive -iņš ending is everywhere. Others come from trades (Kalējs, smith; Mucenieks, cooper), animals (Vanags, hawk; Lācis, bear; Zaķis, hare) or German roots left from centuries of Baltic German influence (Feldmanis, Grīnbergs, Rozentāls). Given names range from Christian saints' names in Latvian form (Jānis, Pēteris, Anna, Marija) to native words revived during the 19th-century National Awakening, such as Dzintra (amber), Ausma (dawn), Vizma (shimmer) and Zaiga (glow).
