Generate Finnish last names: eastern -nen names like Korhonen and Kolehmainen, western farm names like Mäkelä and Mattila, nature names like Järvi, Laine and Kivimäki, and Finland-Swedish surnames like Lindholm and Söderström.

About Finnish last names

Finland has two surname traditions, and most of this list comes from one or the other. In the east, in Savo and Karelia, families carried hereditary names ending in -nen centuries before the rest of the country: Korhonen, Hämäläinen, Karjalainen, Kolehmainen. In the west people were known by the farm they lived on, often a name in -la or -lä meaning "the place of" (Mattila is Matti's place, Seppälä the smith's place), and the name could change when a family moved. A fixed surname for everyone became law only in the early 1920s.

The nature names are younger. In the late 1800s, and again in a wave of name changes in 1906, families swapped Swedish names for Finnish ones or took their first fixed surname, building it from the landscape: Virtanen from virta (stream), Mäkinen from mäki (hill), Järvinen from järvi (lake), or the bare word, as in Laine (wave), Niemi (headland) and Koski (rapids).

The list also holds compound names (Kivimäki, Kangasniemi, Uusitalo), Ostrobothnian farm pairs with Ala- and Yli-, Latinized names in -ius such as Sibelius and Topelius, and the Swedish surnames of coastal Finland and Åland, like Lindholm, Nyström and Söderholm. Finnish surnames have one form for everyone, with no male or female endings.

How to choose Finnish last names

  • Keep the dots. Ä and ö are letters of their own in Finnish, not a and o with decoration, so Mäkelä, Hämäläinen and Rönkkö should be written exactly as they appear here.
  • Let the name place your character: long -nen names such as Kolehmainen and Hakkarainen point to Savo and Karelia, farm names in -la and the Ala- and Yli- pairs to the west and Ostrobothnia, Swedish names to the south and west coasts and Åland.
  • Use vowel harmony to catch a misspelling: the farm ending is -la when the name has an a, o or u in it (Ahola, Mattila, Koskela) and -lä otherwise (Mäkelä, Heikkilä, Seppälä).
  • Doubled letters are long sounds and part of the name, so Mattila, Heikkinen and Määttä keep every letter. Stress always falls on the first syllable.
  • For family history, expect older spellings in church records, which were long kept in Swedish: W for V is common, so Wirtanen and Virtanen can be one family.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Finnish last names?

Korhonen and Virtanen head the list in Finland, followed by names such as Mäkinen, Nieminen, Mäkelä, Hämäläinen, Laine, Heikkinen, Koskinen and Järvinen. All ten are in this generator, along with hundreds of less common surnames from every part of the country.

What does -nen mean in Finnish last names?

The ending -nen is an everyday Finnish suffix that makes a small or related form of a word, so in a surname it reads roughly as "of" or "from" that thing. Virtanen is built on virta (stream), Koskinen on koski (rapids) and Heikkinen on the given name Heikki. It does not mean "son", and it is the same for women and men.

Why do many Finns have Swedish last names?

Finland was part of Sweden until 1809, Swedish is still an official language, and a Swedish-speaking minority lives along the coasts and on Åland. Names like Lindholm, Nyman, Eklund and Söderström come from that tradition. Many other families translated or replaced a Swedish name with a Finnish one around the start of the 20th century.

Do Finnish surnames have male and female forms?

No. A Finnish surname has one form for everyone, so a brother and a sister are both Korhonen or both Mäkelä. A married couple can share one surname or each keep their own.
