Generate LARP character names for fantasy and historical live-action games: medieval human names, Norse and Celtic styles, elves, dwarves and orcs, single-word rogue handles, titled nobles and clergy, and names with epithets. Built for boffer fests, parlour games and campaign systems alike.

About larp names

A LARP name has one job that a novel or tabletop name never does: other people have to shout it across a field, remember it after one introduction, and say it with a straight face in costume. That rules out most of what looks good on paper. Long elvish strings blur together, joke names stop being funny by Saturday afternoon, and anything that rhymes with another player's name causes confusion in a battle line. The names that survive in the hobby are short, distinctive and easy to lip-read: Wren, Brannoc, Dame Isolde, Gorbag Toothless.

The list covers the styles most systems actually use. Medieval English and Cornish names fit generic fantasy kingdoms and most British fests; Norse, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon forms suit northern or tribal nations; Germanic, Italian, French and Iberian names fit Renaissance, swashbuckling and intrigue games; elven, dwarven, orcish and halfling names follow the conventions players expect. There are also titled names (Sir, Dame, Sister, Captain), trade names (Smith Gottfried, Alewife Marjory), epithets (Eirik Half-Hand, One-Eyed Jory) and one-word handles for rogues, mercenaries and anyone who prefers not to be known by a surname.

Check your game's setting guide before you commit: many systems tie naming styles to specific nations, and a name that matches your faction does half the roleplay for you.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a name you can hear shouted over a melee. Two syllables for the part people will actually use (Bran, Isolde, Gorbag) is the sweet spot; put any length in the surname or epithet.
  • Match the style to your faction's culture in the rulebook. A Norse-sounding name in a Renaissance Italian nation marks you as an outsider, which is fine only if that is the character.
  • Check the player list or event Facebook group for clashes. Two Ravens or two Wrens at a 500-player fest guarantees someone runs the wrong way when called.
  • Give yourself a name that can grow. Plain 'Tam' can become 'Tam the Ferryman' and later 'Captain Tam Coldwater' as the character earns titles over a campaign.
  • Avoid names that are puns or references; they are funny once, then you are stuck with them for five years of play.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of names work best for LARP?

Short, distinctive names that are easy to hear and remember: one or two syllables for the part people will use most, plus an optional surname, title or epithet. Wren, Brannoc Greyhand, Dame Isolde Carrow and Eirik Half-Hand are all easier to use in play than a five-syllable elvish name.

Should my LARP name match a particular culture or race?

Usually yes. Most campaign systems give each nation or race a naming style, and matching it signals where your character comes from before you say a word. The list groups names by style (medieval English, Norse, Celtic, Germanic, Mediterranean, elven, dwarven, orcish) so you can pick one that fits your faction.

Can I use a single-word name at a LARP?

Absolutely. One-word names such as Thorn, Flint, Sable or Fingers are common for rogues, mercenaries, outlaws and low-born characters, and they are the easiest names to shout. Many players add a surname or title later as the character rises in the world.

Is it okay to use a name from a famous book or game?

Most events allow it, but it is frowned on because it pulls other players out of the fiction. Use the original names here, or lift a style rather than a character: a name that sounds Tolkien-elvish is fine, but turning up as Legolas is not.
