Generate adventuring party names the way real D&D tables actually name themselves: heroic banners like the Valiant Few, Critical Role-style names like the Mighty Nein, and self-aware jokes like Rolled a Nat 1 and Chaotic Neutral Evil.

About adventuring party names

Adventuring party names come from two very different places. Inside the fiction, a party names itself the way a mercenary company or knightly order would: The Company of the Red Cloak, The Wardens of the Old Road, The Fellowship of the Last Coin. Outside the fiction, real tables name themselves after whatever happened at the game: a disastrous roll, a running joke, or the moment the cleric ran out of spell slots. Both traditions are valid, and the most beloved parties in tabletop history mix them. Vox Machina is Latin for 'voice machine', a joke about the players' day jobs; the Mighty Nein is a nod to a mispronounced number; countless home games are named Rolled a Nat 1.

Structurally, heroic party names favour 'The [Adjective] [Plural Noun]' (The Valiant Few, The Silver Swords), 'The [Noun] of [Place]' (The Ravens of Karn), and single-word banners (The Restless, The Undying). Funny names lean on rules vocabulary that any player will recognise: advantage, death saves, long rests, insight checks, bag of holding.

A strong party name should be short enough to write on a tavern ledger and flexible enough to survive a character death. Avoid naming the group after a specific member or class unless the joke is the point, and remember that a name chosen at level one can be formally adopted, or replaced, at a dramatic moment later in the campaign.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Wait until session two or three; the best party names come from something that actually happened at the table rather than from a brainstorm at session zero.
  • Keep it under five words. 'The Valiant Few' fits on a wanted poster; 'The Legendary Heroes of the Northern Realms' does not.
  • If you want an in-world name, choose one an NPC could plausibly say with a straight face, such as The Wardens of the Old Road or The Company of the Red Cloak.
  • For a funny name, use rules jokes everyone at the table understands (Advantage on Everything, Death Saves Only) rather than a joke only one player gets.
  • Do not tie the name to a class or race that might leave the party; a dead paladin makes 'The Paladins' Oath' awkward, while 'The Broken Oath' becomes a great story.

Frequently asked questions

How do D&D adventuring parties usually get their names?

Most are named after a shared event, an in-joke, or a place the party started, and are often chosen a few sessions in rather than at session zero. In-world, a party may register a formal name with a guild or city, which is where charter-style names like The Company of the Red Cloak come from.

What are some famous adventuring party names?

Vox Machina, the Mighty Nein and Bells Hells from Critical Role, the Oxventurers Guild, and the Bad Kids from Dimension 20 are well known modern examples. Older sources include the Company of the Wolf and the Knights of Myth Drannor from Forgotten Realms lore.

Should our party name be serious or funny?

It depends on the campaign's tone, but many groups keep both: a serious name used in the fiction and a joke name used at the table. A name like The Doomed Optimists or The Blessed and the Broke sits neatly between the two.

Can I use these names for a stream, podcast or Discord server?

Yes. All the names here are original and free to use for actual plays, servers, campaign wikis and merch. Search the name first if you plan to build a public brand around it, to make sure another show is not already using it.
