Generate landscape and terrain names for fantasy maps, novels, and game worlds: valleys, moors, plains, badlands, marshes, highlands, and coasts named the way real geographic features are, from the Weeping Fells to Sorrow's Reach and the Salt Flats of Karrow.

About landscape names

Real landscape names are built from a small vocabulary that has been used for centuries. In Britain a fell is a high moor, a dale a valley, a wold rolling upland, a fen or marsh low wet ground, a down a chalk hill, a heath open scrub, and a march a border land. Colonial mapmakers added flats, barrens, badlands, breaks, and reaches. Names describe the ground honestly (the Yorkshire Dales, the Norfolk Broads, the Great Plains, the Badlands, Death Valley) or record what happened there (the Killing Fields, the Slaughters in the Cotswolds).

Fantasy maps use the same words with the mood turned up. Tolkien's Barrow-downs, Dead Marshes, and Brown Lands, and George R. R. Martin's Neck, Riverlands, and Dothraki Sea, all follow the pattern of an adjective or story word plus a real terrain term. Two structures cover almost everything: a compound name (Blackmoor, Hollowdale, Ironfold) for a small feature that locals treat as one word, and a definite-article name (The Weeping Fells, The Salt Flats of Karrow) for a large region that outsiders describe.

The list above gives you both, spread across valleys, moors, plains, marshes, coasts, and wastes, so a fantasy map or a novel's setting reads like a real gazetteer instead of a pile of adjectives.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use the terrain word correctly: a fell is high and bare, a fen is wet, a wold rolls, a down is chalk hill; players and readers who know the words will notice.
  • Save definite-article names (The Grey Wastes) for large regions and one-word compounds (Greymarsh) for local features inside them.
  • Give a dangerous region a name that implies a story (The Widow's Downs, The Godsfall Crater) instead of a mood adjective, then let the story explain it.
  • Mix languages deliberately: a border region can have one name from each side of it, which is a cheap way to signal history.
  • Keep a consistent palette of suffixes per culture on your map (moor/fell/dale for one people, steppe/reach/march for another) so regions feel owned.

Frequently asked questions

What do words like fell, wold, dale, and fen mean?

They're old English terrain words: fell is a high bare hill or moor, wold is rolling open upland, dale is a valley, fen is low marshy ground, down is a chalk hill, heath is open scrubland, and march is a border region.

How do real landscapes get their names?

Usually from a plain description of the terrain (Great Plains, Badlands, the Broads), a color or feature (Black Hills, Salt Flats), a nearby settlement or river, or an event that happened there. Fantasy names simply intensify those patterns.

How many landscape regions should a fantasy map have?

For a novel or campaign, six to twelve named regions is plenty; each should have a distinct terrain type so the names carry information (a moor, a marsh, a plain, a coast, a range of fells) rather than all being 'lands'.

Can I use these names in a published book or game?

Yes. The names here are free for personal and commercial use. Avoid names that belong to established franchises (Barrow-downs, Riverlands) if you're publishing your own world.
