Korean Dragon Name Generator
Yong, Yongwang and imugi names built from Korean words
Generate names for Korean dragons, the rain and water guardians called yong, and for the imugi that has not yet earned its pearl. The list runs from Cheongryong and Donghae Yongwang to Danbi Mireu, Dragon of Mount Jiri and Haeryong the Tide-Keeper.
About Korean dragon names
Korean dragons are water beings first. The yong brings rain, keeps seas, rivers and wells, and answers to Yongwang, the Dragon King, in his palace under the waves. Beside it stands the imugi, the great serpent of folk tales that still waits for the pearl called the yeouiju and for the day it may rise as a dragon. A small share of this list is attested: Yongwang and the Dragon Kings of the four seas, Cheongryong, the blue dragon of the east, Hwangryong, the yellow dragon of the center, the gyeryong, and Munmu, the Silla king who asked to guard the East Sea as a dragon.
Most of the 1,000 names are original. They are made from Korean vocabulary and are not figures of myth: Sino-Korean compounds such as Unryong and Damryong, court titles for the dragon palace, native words like Haneul, Baram and Danbi, imugi names, and names with an English epithet. Mireu and Garam are traditional words, not everyday modern Korean. Place dragons such as Dragon of Mount Jiri use real geography and claim no legend.
The dragon syllable is yong at the start of a word and ryong inside one. Compounds are written syllable by syllable (Cheongryong, Baekryong), where strict Revised Romanization writes Cheongnyong and Baengnyong. Place names keep their usual English spellings.
How to choose Korean dragon names
- Decide what your dragon keeps. A sea dragon suits Haeryong or Donghae Yongwang, a well or pond dragon suits Jeongryong or Umul Yongsin, and a rain dragon suits Uryong or Danbi Mireu.
- Use the two registers on purpose. Sino-Korean compounds such as Cheongryong and Geumryong sound formal and old, while native words such as Noeul, Yunseul and Garam sound softer and closer to nature.
- For an imugi, pick a name it can outgrow. Cheonnyeon Imugi or Imugi the Pearl-Seeker tells the reader the story is not over, and a ryong name can wait for the day it rises.
- Give a court title a place to serve. Yonggung Sumunjang is the gate commander of the dragon palace, and English forms such as Keeper of the Rain Jar read well beside a Korean name.
- Keep one spelling. If you write Cheongryong, do not switch to Cheongnyong later, or readers will take them for two different dragons.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Korean dragon called?
The word is yong. It is written yong at the start of a word and ryong inside a compound, as in Cheongryong, the blue dragon of the east. Mireu is a traditional native word for dragon that you will meet in names more often than in everyday speech, and the Dragon King is Yongwang.
What is an imugi?
In Korean folk tales the imugi is a huge serpent that has not yet become a dragon. It waits in deep water, often for a very long time, until it wins the pearl called the yeouiju and can rise to the sky. The list has names such as Cheonnyeon Imugi, Imugi of the Deep Pool and The Pearlless One for a creature at that stage.
Are these names from real Korean mythology?
A small share is: Yongwang, the Dragon Kings of the four seas such as Donghae Yongwang, Cheongryong, Hwangryong, Gyeryong and the imugi itself. A few more entries are borrowed from scripture and old stories: the eight dragon kings of Buddhist texts in their Korean readings, such as Nanta Yongwang and Sagara Yongwang, Cheoyong, the Dragon King's son, the drought-bringer Gangcheori, and figures who are not dragons themselves, such as the river god Habaek and Pungbaek, Usa and Unsa, the lords of wind, rain and cloud. Most of the rest are original names made from Korean words, such as Unryong, Noeul Mireu or Haeryong the Tide-Keeper, and they are not figures of myth. The place dragons use real mountains, rivers and islands in English form and do not claim a local legend.
Why does the list say Cheongryong and not Cheongnyong?
Both spell the same Korean word. Strict Revised Romanization writes the sound changes, which gives Cheongnyong and Baengnyong, while the syllable by syllable spelling gives Cheongryong and Baekryong. This list uses the second form throughout, so whichever you choose for your story, stay with one.
