Generate Korean fantasy names for webtoon heroes, murim martial artists, Joseon-flavored nobles and modern-day hunters: authentic surname-plus-given-name combinations like Baek Mu-hyeok, Seo Ha-eun and Namgung Hwi that read like they came from a real manhwa.

About Korean fantasy names

Korean fantasy names follow the real-world pattern of a one-syllable family name followed by a two-syllable given name, written surname first: Baek Mu-hyeok, Seo Ha-eun, Kang Tae-yang. What makes a name feel like it belongs in a manhwa or K-fantasy novel is the choice of syllables. Martial-arts (murim) stories lean on hard, hanja-derived sounds such as Mu (martial), Cheon (heaven), Ryong (dragon), Hyeok, Gang and Geom (sword), while modern hunter or regressor stories use everyday names like Jin-woo, Ha-jun and Yoo-jin so the hero feels like someone you could meet in Seoul. Historical and sageuk-flavored casts favor older, softer syllables like Seol, Wol, Hwa, Ryeon and Yeon.

Rare two-syllable surnames are a quick way to signal a noble house or a major clan: Namgung, Dokgo, Hwangbo, Sagong, Seonu, Jegal and Dongbang are all real Korean surnames and are staples of murim fiction for exactly that reason. Pure-Korean given names built from native words (Ha-neul "sky", Byeol "star", Sae-byeok "dawn", Nu-ri "world") suit gentler or nature-linked characters.

This generator mixes all of those registers so you can pick the style that fits your setting and find names that sound consistent across a whole cast.

How to choose Korean fantasy names

  • Pick one romanization style for your whole cast and stick to it: either hyphenate given names (Ji-hoon, Seol-hwa) or run them together (Jihoon, Seolhwa). Mixing both in one story looks like a typo.
  • Reserve two-syllable surnames like Namgung, Dokgo and Hwangbo for clan heads, sect masters or rival noble families; their rarity is what makes them feel important.
  • Match the syllable set to the sub-genre: heavy hanja sounds (Mu, Cheon, Ryong, Geom) for murim and cultivation, ordinary modern names (Min-jun, Seo-yeon) for hunter and regressor stories, soft syllables (Seol, Wol, Ryeon) for historical settings.
  • Siblings and family members often share a generational syllable, so giving a brother and sister names like Ha-jun and Ha-eun is a subtle, realistic touch.
  • Give your villain or rival a name that contrasts in sound with the lead: if the hero is Kim Jin-woo, something like Cheon Ma-ryong or Baek Yu-seol immediately reads as a different kind of person.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the family name written first?

Korean names are always surname first, then given name (Kim Jin-woo, not Jin-woo Kim). Manhwa translations and K-fantasy novels keep this order, so the generator does too. If you are writing for a Western audience you can flip it, but keep it consistent.

What is the difference between a murim name and a modern Korean fantasy name?

Murim (Korean martial-arts fantasy) names use archaic, hanja-heavy syllables and clan surnames like Namgung or Dokgo, similar in spirit to wuxia. Modern K-fantasy such as hunter, dungeon and regressor stories uses realistic present-day names like Sung Jin-woo or Han Yoo-jin because the hero is meant to be an ordinary person. Both styles are included here.

Can I use these names for a male or female character?

Most Korean given names are not strongly gendered, though some syllables lean one way: Mu, Hyeok, Gang, Jun and Ho are more common for men, while Seol, Hwa, Yeon, Eun and Rin are more common for women. Many names like Ji-an, Ha-ram or Yeon-woo work for either.

Are these names authentic, or are they made up?

They are built from real Korean surnames and real, attested given-name syllables, so they look and sound like names a Korean reader would accept. Folk heroes like Hong Gil-dong and Jeon Woo-chi appear for flavor; everything else is an original combination rather than a name lifted from a specific series, so you can use them without clashing with an existing character.
