About Korean names
Korean names put the family name first and the given name second, so in Kim Seo-yeon the family is Kim and the person is called Seo-yeon. Only about 250 surnames are in use, and five of them (Kim, Lee, Park, Choi and Jung) cover roughly half of South Korea, which is why two Kims in the same office are rarely related. Rarer two-syllable surnames such as Namgung, Hwangbo and Sunwoo exist but stand out immediately.
Most given names are two syllables, each drawn from a Chinese-derived character (hanja) with its own meaning: Seo (auspicious) plus Yeon (beautiful), or Min (clever) plus Jun (talented). Since the 1980s parents have also chosen pure Korean words with no hanja at all, such as Ha-neul (sky), Seul-gi (wisdom), Bo-ram (worthwhile) and Saet-byeol (new star), and a few go further with single-syllable names like Sol (pine) or Byeol (star). Older generations tend toward names ending in -sook, -ja, -hee, -chul and -ho, so a grandmother called Young-sook and a granddaughter called Ji-woo sound right for their age.
Romanization varies from family to family: the same name can be written Seo-yeon, Seoyeon or Seo Yeon, and Lee is also spelled Yi or Rhee. This generator uses the hyphenated style most common in passports and English-language media, and you can adjust to taste.
How to choose Korean names
- Match the name to the character's birth year: Ji-woo, Seo-yeon, Do-yun and Si-woo top the charts after 2010; Ji-hye, Min-jun and Hyun-woo suit people born in the 1990s; Young-sook, Sung-min and Jung-ho sound like parents and grandparents.
- Check the hanja meaning if it matters to your story. Two popular characters that combine well give a name with a built-in wish, such as Eun-ji (kindness and wisdom) or Tae-yang (great and bright), and many Koreans can recite their own name's meaning on request.
- Keep the family name first and pick from the common ones (Kim, Lee, Park, Choi, Jung, Kang, Cho, Yoon, Jang, Lim) unless you want the character to be memorable for having a rare surname like Namgung or Jegal.
- Avoid mixing genders accidentally: Seo-yeon, Ha-eun, Ye-jin and Soo-ah read as female, Min-jun, Seo-jun, Ji-ho and Geon-woo as male, while Ji-woo, Ha-neul and Ha-yoon are used for both.
- Choose one romanization scheme and stick to it across a cast so Kim Seo-yeon and Lee Seo-yun do not look like typos of each other.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the family name come first in Korean names?
Korean, like Chinese and Japanese, places the family before the individual, so Park Ji-woo is Ms. or Mr. Park with the given name Ji-woo. In English-language settings many Koreans reverse the order to Ji-woo Park, but in Korea the surname always leads.
Do Korean names have meanings?
Yes. Most given names are made of two hanja characters chosen for meaning, so Ji-hye combines wisdom and grace and Min-jun combines clever and talented. Pure Korean names like Ha-neul (sky), Bit-na (shining) and Na-rae (wing) carry their meaning directly from the Korean word.
Which Korean surnames are most common?
Kim (about 21 percent of South Koreans), Lee (15 percent), Park (8 percent), then Choi, Jung, Kang, Cho, Yoon, Jang and Lim. Together the top ten cover around two-thirds of the population, which is why Koreans usually address each other by full name or title rather than surname alone.
How do I pick a Korean name for myself?
Most people either choose a name that sounds similar to their own (Hannah becomes Han-na, Eugene becomes Yoo-jin) or pick a hanja meaning they like.
