Generate dragon god names for the deities at the top of a draconic pantheon: primordial wyrms who shaped the world, elemental dragon lords, sleeping world-serpents and the divine ancestors of dragonborn and kobolds. Includes bare names, names with epithets and mythic titles for D&D, Pathfinder, novels and worldbuilding.
About dragon god names
Dragon gods sit a rung above ordinary dragons, and their names need to show it. The best-known examples set the pattern: Tiamat and Bahamut in Dungeons & Dragons, Apsu and Tiamat in Babylonian myth, Ryujin in Japan, Nidhoggr and Jormungandr in the Norse Eddas, Quetzalcoatl in Mesoamerica and Vritra in the Vedas. They tend to be two or three heavy syllables, built from open vowels and hard or sibilant consonants (th, kh, zh, x, rr), and they sound older than the languages spoken by the mortals who worship them.
A draconic deity name usually comes in two parts. The first is the true name, which mortals rarely speak: Azhuroth, Kyrvanthis, Ormthael. The second is the epithet or title by which temples know them: the Ember That Does Not Die, Mother of Tides, the Coiled Dawn. Epithets attach the god to a domain (a dragon colour, an element, a cosmic role like creation or the end of the world) and make a pantheon feel organised rather than a pile of names.
This list covers both halves: bare true names in several phonetic styles, names with epithets, pure titles for gods whose names are forbidden, and a few borrowed from real mythology. Mix them when you build a pantheon so chromatic gods, metallic gods and primordial serpents each sound distinct.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give each dragon god a domain before the name: a colour, an element or a cosmic job. Then pick sounds that fit, hard k and kh for fire and war, liquid l and th for sea and sky, hissing s and z for shadow and poison.
- Use the two-name rule: a short true name for priests and scholars, plus a longer epithet for common worship. Players and readers will remember whichever is easier and the other adds lore.
- Keep rival gods phonetically different. If the god of storms is Kyrvanthis, do not name the god of stone Kyrvanthos; use different first letters and syllable counts across the pantheon.
- Avoid names that are already iconic in a major setting unless you are playing in it. Bahamut, Tiamat and Io are instantly recognisable from D&D, and Alduin from Skyrim.
- For kobold, lizardfolk or dragonborn cultures, make a worn-down vernacular form of the god's name (Azhuroth becomes Zhurr) to show how long they have been worshipped.
Frequently asked questions
What are some famous dragon gods from mythology and fiction?
Mythology gives us Tiamat and Apsu (Babylon), Ryujin (Japan), Quetzalcoatl (Aztec), Nidhoggr and Jormungandr (Norse), Vritra (Vedic), Apep (Egypt) and the Dragon Kings of the four seas in Chinese tradition. Fiction adds Bahamut, Tiamat and Io from D&D, Akatosh and Alduin from The Elder Scrolls, and Apsu and Dahak from Pathfinder.
How is a dragon god name different from a normal dragon name?
A regular dragon name belongs to one creature and often has a personal ring, like Smaug or Saphira. A dragon god name has to carry a domain and an age: it is usually heavier, often paired with an epithet such as Mother of Storms, and avoids anything too cute or modern so it feels like it predates the world.
Can I use these names for a D&D or Pathfinder campaign?
Yes. They are original and free to use for homebrew pantheons, dragonborn and kobold religions, or as the true names of ancient wyrms. Pair a name with a domain, an alignment and a holy symbol and you have a ready-made deity entry.
Should a dragon pantheon share a naming style?
Gods from the same origin, such as the children of one primordial wyrm, should share sounds and suffixes so they feel related. Gods from opposed factions, such as chromatic versus metallic, should sound clearly different so players can tell at a glance which side a name belongs to.
